    Introduction

    Why such focus on Jesus?

1.Perhaps, the biggest reason we share Jesus in every message, is that Jesus reveals the heart of God.

"No one has ever seen God, at any time, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father (is in the very bosom of the Father), has made Him known (has explained him)" (John 1:18).

We’d only know God as almighty, omni — everything, infinite creator of the universe, if it wasn’t for Jesus showing us God’s heart. We are asking kids to trust the thing most precious to them, their very own hearts, to God. No one trusts anyone unless they are assured that the person is trustworthy, has a good heart, and truly cares for them. How would we know those things about God, if Jesus didn’t show us God’s heart? Often kids’ hearts have been wounded because they trusted someone before and were hurt. This makes them even more reluctant to trust their hearts to God. In addition, they cannot see God. Jesus shows them God; Jesus makes God seeable, touchable, knowable, and trustable.

2.When you lift up Jesus, (not religion or a case for Christianity) all people will be drawn to Him.

"Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up" (John 3:14).

"So Jesus said, ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He … ’" (John 8:28).

"‘And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself’"

    (John 12:32).

George Sheffer (one of the first staff in Young Life) said: If kids knew how wonderful the Savior is, they’d fall in love with Him.

Phillip Yancey tells the story of a Harvard professor, who when he heard someone say, I don’t believe in Jesus, would answer, Tell me about this Jesus you don’t believe in, because I probably don’t believe in him either. Generally, people don’t disbelieve in Jesus; rather, they have a distorted, warped view of Him. We have the opportunity to present the real Jesus.

    3. Forgiveness of sin (which is our greatest need) and union with God (which is our greatest hope) are found in Jesus.

"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

"But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:5-6).

"God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God" (II Corinthians 5:21).

    4. Jesus is the best of Christianity — the best we have to present.

I heard of an experiment done on the Boulder campus of the University of Colorado. They filmed interviews with students randomly stopped on campus with this question: We’re doing a survey about where college students stand on religion in America. What do you think about Christianity? The first fifty students responded negatively. It was unanimous. Fifty for fifty. They cited arrogance, intolerance, the Crusades, discrimination, the failing church, a sordid history, hypocrites, and more. Then, with the same introduction, they changed the question to: What do you think about Jesus? The next fifty students answered positively. No lie. Fifty for fifty. With great respect, they reflected on His character (laying down His life, standing up for what He believed in), His teaching, how He radically treated people equally, how He stood up to corrupt authority, and more.

Ask anyone, What is Christianity? and he or she will most likely respond with things to believe in plus morals to live by. We simply lift up Jesus and a friendship with Him. Doctrines to believe, and a way to live, flow out of friendship with Jesus.

    5. Jesus truly knows our pain and our situations; He enters in and actually bears it with us.

"Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted" (Hebrews 2:18).

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, rather we have one who has experienced all of life, just as we have … " (Hebrews 4:15-16).

As our creator, He made us. As the One who upholds the universe, He knows all about us. As the Incarnate One, He gets us. He identified with us, so that we can identify with Him.

    Psalm 139:1-6

    Matthew 10:29-31

    6. Jesus is Who we invite into our hearts. People want and need to know Who is going to be living within them.

"So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith" (Ephesians 3:17).

"God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27).

    7. Jesus lived life to the FULL, and He will impart that abundant life to us (from the inside out).

"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10b).

"For in Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

"‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, [to heal the broken hearted from Isaiah 61] and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing’"

    (Luke 4:17-21).
