    Chapter One

Seb brushes his hand slowly along my throat and moves it downwards to gently cup my breast, before kissing me deeply on the lips. I match his passion and find myself pulling him towards the bed. My breathing becomes heavier as our bodies become entwined. I look up into Seb’s eyes….

I find I am awakened from my dream by a noise coming from within the room. Reality hitting me hard in the face as I realize I had been dreaming again, I lie in bed contemplating the dream and think over the past year. I had been abandoned by Seb and had not seen or heard anything from him, since the night we had escaped his world and made love for the first time, sharing more than passion.

Throughout this year I have been tormented by the dreams of his world and I have been filled with an emptiness I am unable to describe. But, there have been positive outcomes in my life, I have completed my course at Tafe and I have moved out of my parents’ home and into a small apartment, but I still see them frequently. Luckily I scored a job with a publishing company, which allows me to work on my photos and art work from home most days, which has become vitally important.

Life hasn’t been too unkind. Jules and Erica share an apartment close by and we hang out and surf when we can. But I miss Seb so much that there is only one thing that keeps me living in this existence……

My mind contemplated these thoughts, but was abruptly haltered by noise coming from across the room, reality checked in again with a heavy thump! I walked towards the cot and picked up the small bundle of blue making all the noise, trying to gain my attention to feed him.

When Seb left to return to Aidensdein, he left more than me behind, he had also left his unborn child. I don’t know what will become of him as he grows and the world starts to notice his differences, but I know I will be there for him always, to help him through whatever difficulties he might face, I will ensure we face them together.

I named our vampire child Auron and every day I seem to see more of Seb in his features. I try to forget the torture the pregnancy had put me through. It was agony especially at the end! First I had to explain that I was pregnant to Mum and Dad, who were definitely not pleased about the fact that I had become pregnant and that Seb had abandoned me in my time of need.

My body changed, I became more athletic looking, my muscles became more pronounced and I now have enough strength to lift a small car. This was all because of the blood I drank from Seb as we made love.

When this had first started happening I had made lots of mistakes. I would pick up a glass or plate and pulverize it in my grasp without even realizing. Opening doors was also a problem, until I learned how to control my strength and teach myself the skills necessary to hide my changes from my friends and family. As my pregnancy progressed I began to crave blood. I had no one to talk to about what was going on or to give me any advice or guidance to help me through it. I found myself completely and utterly alone!

My memories of our time together are my only salvation when I am alone at night in my bed. I miss Seb, I miss him so much.

The final weeks of the pregnancy were a challenge. I was unable to go to hospital for the birth of my child as I was unsure what he or she would actually be. There was also the fear of my own changes. Medical practitioners would not believe the developments in my own body! As Auron grew inside of me I could feel my insides tearing and at times there was blood, but it only lasted for short periods as the exchange with Seb gave my body the capability to heal extremely fast. A cut on my finger heals as quickly as the act itself.

Auron’s delivery was horrific and at the time I contemplated asking one of my friends for help, but decided not to take the chance of compromising myself or my unborn child. So I had kept it very secret and hired a cabin up in the mountains away from civilization and lived there for the last month of the nine!

I found through trial and error that a mixture of animal blood, powdered milk and vitamins allowed me to feed Auron from a bottle and seemed to sustain his hunger.

I live closer to the Maroochydore town centre now, which makes it more convenient to get around and the roads are lined with footpaths making the task of pushing Auron in his pram an acceptable one.

Walking along, I take a deep breath of fresh air and with my new abilities I am able to distinguish between the different scents that I can smell. The most discernible, is the salt from the nearby ocean, it is mixed with the bitterness of pollution from the heavy traffic which is almost a constant in this once pristine paradise. I can also distinguish different foods and the strong, rich aroma of coffee coming from nearby coffee shops.

Auron was enjoying the outing and I was surprised to find him sitting up in his pram taking in all the sights and other sensual pleasures as we moved along.

We walked past a new business which was opening up in town and I stopped to contemplate whether to take a pamphlet from where they were being displayed in a small box attached to the wall, which was positioned next to a poster advertising a new martial art complex opening up next week. The poster stated that they were giving away free lessons for the first fifty applicants who showed an interest.

I decided to take a pamphlet and headed to the closest coffee shop to sit and read through the brochure while I fed Auron a bottle. When the waitress approached me to take my order, I asked for a flat white.

While I wait for the coffee to arrive, I think over the decision whether or not to pursue the lessons. In the days before I had stupidly ended up moving through the porthole into Seb’s world, I had promised myself that I would learn the necessary skills to protect myself and had not yet pursued this course of action. So, what did I have to loose! The brochure advertised that they operated a crèche for free during the time of the lessons, so Auron would be looked after while I trained and if I was lucky I might still have a chance to receive a number of lessons for free.

Yes! My decision was made by the end of my coffee.

I headed back to the complex and approached the entrance to the building. It was open so I moved forward towards the front desk, where a pretty blond haired girl was sitting, filing her nails.

Excuse me! I injected a bit nervously. She looked up and smiled, her pretty green eyes lighting up as she looked towards Auron and myself.

I would like to sign up for the advertised classes! I stated.

Yes, of course! she answered and fumbled on the desk to gather the necessary forms I needed to fill out. You will be pleased to find out that you are one of the last ten applicants eligible for the free lessons we are giving away!

Great! I was hoping I would make it into the first fifty. I replied, with genuine relief.

As I filled out the paper work she asked me what days I would like to attend the classes. She suggested that two per week would be beneficial to begin with, and later on I could drop back to one, or add on more. She introduced herself as Candice and seemed genuinely interested in taking the time to answer my questions and make me feel welcome. I organized my booking for Monday and Wednesday mornings to include the crèche time for Auron.

Pleased that I had organized something positive for myself in my future, I turned the pram around and continued on with our first outing, thinking good, positive thoughts!

The rest of the week went by quickly. Auron and I spent some time with my parents and took to the streets once again walking along the foreshore using the walkways, which run parallel to the beach. The beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean stretched out to the horizon pushed away the cobwebs from my mind and presented me with a fresh new start to mine and Auron’s life!

I decided to put the past behind me and once and for all forget or at least not dwell on what happened between Seb and me. I had now come to the realization that after such a long time it was unlikely he was ever going to return….

    Chapter Two

On Monday I dressed in my old leotards and shorts, bundled Auron up, placed him into his pram and made my way to the martial art centre for my first lesson in self-defence. I was feeling exited, but I was also a little apprehensive. I had to be careful not to allow my vampire like abilities to show, especially in the beginning, I was also a little worried about leaving Auron in the hands of a stranger whilst I trained. But since the threat of the rogues, I have been determined to learn the skills necessary to defend myself and this was a positive step towards this goal.

A short while later I was surrounded by a number of other women probably feeling the same emotions as I, as we nervously waited for our ‘Sensei’ to enter the room and start the lesson.

My heart skipped a beat when he did. His resemblance to Seb was uncanny! He stood around the same height and his physic was also similar. He had dark, wavy hair which fell loosely around his collar, the only difference I could see was that his eyes were a dark brown and he had a few piercings on his face around his mouth!

To start the class he gathered us around and asked everyone in the room general questions regarding what training we’d had previously and if any of us had any physical or medical conditions which would impact upon the regime. He began by introducing himself as Ryan and started splitting us into various groups of experience and possible fitness levels.

We started with a warm up, before seriously entering forward into the lesson, Ryan explained that these classes would not centre on one particular martial art style, but would be a combination of many.

This suited me, I wanted to learn what I could quickly.

Of course this first lesson was more about learning the basics and proper techniques than becoming adequate in defensive capabilities. By the end of the lesson, even with the vampire blood running through my veins, I could feel muscles which I had never used before and I was glad for the hour to be over.

I picked up Auron from the crèche and headed towards the door feeling good about using my strength in a positive way which could be beneficial to me in the future!

Approaching the door my sensitive hearing picked up the receptionist Candice, and the instructor talking. Ryan was discussing an event one of them had witnessed last night which had taken place in Mooloolaba. It sounded very much like the rogue vampires might be back in town.

I hurried home with Auron, ensuring my door was well and truly locked, before turning on the TV to see if anything of their discussion had been reported by the news. There was nothing, so I booted up my lap top and checked out the internet to be sure, but couldn’t find anything there either. If there was a possibility that any of them had returned through the porthole from Aidensdein, Auron and I would be in serious trouble.

Deciding that my nerves were getting the better of me, I put my anxious thoughts out of my mind and went through the postures and techniques I had learned in class today. Practicing every one over and over until I felt I could complete each one perfectly.

The weeks went by, I was kept busy with my work and caring for Auron, any spare time I had, was spent practicing the martial art techniques I was learning, until I felt I knew them well enough that I would be able to use them if I had to.

I enjoyed watching Ryan and fantasizing about him being Seb. Pretending this was the life we now shared. It was uncanny how closely they resembled each other. As I watched Ryan move through various techniques in his instruction, I took visual pleasure watching his muscles flex and tense across his body. He was a very capable instructor and I was learning quickly, using my vampire gifts to enhance the power of my moves. I practiced at home when I was alone, it gave me a sense of security, something I had never possessed before. I was beginning to believe that if anything eventuated and Auron or I were threatened, I would now be capable of defending us and we may be able to escape an onslaught by any rogue vampires from Seb’s world.

I knew that Ryan was beginning to watch me more intensely at the training sessions, as I had improved beyond the capabilities of his other students, who had joined the classes at the same time as I. It wasn’t long before he began to greet me personally and give me a little more attention than the other students.

It was possibly around six months from the time I had started the sessions that he approached me one morning after a class, asking if I was interested in taking part in an organized bout which was taking place on the coast, in a couple of months’ time. Caught off guard and totally surprised by his question, I stood still, without any words coming to my rescue. I somehow was roped into agreeing with the help of Candice, his receptionist. Part of me was definitely intrigued by the challenge to be had, but my other self knew that it may not be a very good idea and might shed too much attention my way! Before leaving the centre I somehow agreed to proceed with the challenge match Ryan was asking me to participate in.

Auron spent time with my parents, and with Jules and Erica. Keeping his feeds to a more human quality while he was with them was necessary, so when we were alone we spent a lot of time feasting on raw meat and blood. I seemed to need a lot more as I used up my energy learning to fight more effectively and aggressively.

When I wasn’t working on my articles for the magazines I published with, I practiced my new fighting skills, using my vampire speed and strength in the privacy of my own home. My technique was improving and I was sure I would be able to defend myself if a need arose!

Spending more time with Ryan was quite a pleasant experience. But I had to be careful not to mistake him for Seb, as he looked so much like him it would be easy to become lost in my own fantasy.

One afternoon Ryan was showing me a technique which required him to place his hands on me to direct my body into the correct angle. As soon as he touched me I felt a similar connection with him as I had experienced with Seb. Flashes of unfamiliar images raced before my eyes and I had trouble focusing on the technique Ryan was gently trying to persuade my body to perform. When I lost my balance, he caught me before I fell to the floor. I was sure the speed he used could not possibly have been human. As he held me in his arms in the
