Richard is acutely aware of his clumsy moments. And they seem to get worse when Abigail is around. Despite having fallen madly in love with his wife, it seems the only sensible that he do his best to keep her at arm's length. But he soon finds that even the best intentions can go awry...

    Chapter 1

    England 1798

Abigail Malton knew that her plans for the afternoon had come to an abrupt halt the moment her mother knocked as was admitted into her bedroom. Abigail’s mother never visited anyone before the appropriate hours. A socially ambitious matron descending from a long line of English peerage meant that the rules of decorum applied to everyone, even family.

Good morning, mother, Abigail greeted cheerfully as her chambermaid continued to pin up her dark hair, adding finishing touches on her coiffure.

Your father wishes to speak with you after you’ve finished dressing, her mother replied without preamble. He’s in his study. And with that mysterious command issued, her mother left the room, clearly not interested in staying a moment more in such an intimate a setting with her daughter.

And so, approximately a half hour later, Abigail found herself knocking on the door to her father’s study.

Enter! a voice dripping with authority bade from within.

Good morning, father. I was told you wished to see me?

Abigail! Yes I did. Come in and have a seat.

She placed herself in one of the leather armchairs across from her father’s massive oak desk. The room was lined with bookshelves and smelled of cigar smoke. A manly room designed to conduct affairs of the estate.

It was a good thing Abigail was already seated for she would have completely lost the strength in her legs. I beg your pardon, sir?

I’ve spoken with the Davars. Everything has been arranged. You’re to marry young Richard.

    I am? she asked dazedly.

Don’t act so surprised. You’re one and twenty, Abigail. Your older sister has been married already for five years now and has three children. I will not have a spinster daughter. Is there another gentleman paying his attentions toward you?

No, Abigail admitted. I just thought that perhaps I might have a bit of say in whom I—

You’ve had three seasons in London to have any sort of a say. Don’t think that I’m an insensitive father, Abigail. I care about the wellbeing of my daughters. Richard is a good man. He’s only a year older than you and has a promising career ahead of him in Parliament. He’ll be a decent husband.

Abigail didn’t know how to reply to that statement. She should have expected something like this to happen sooner or later. Her role in life had been clearly explained to her since birth. Ladies of privilege did not marry for love; they married to further their family’s social
