Introduction
These days, energy is getting more and more expensive. Energy companies will take everything they can from you, and the government is not going to help you. You need to use as little energy as possible, within reason. Produce energy if possible. This book is about how to save energy and save money. This book will help you seal your house up, so it’s not bleeding energy, select energy efficient appliances, HVAC, and lighting. Follow the principles in this book, and you will save money. This book is not intended to cover each and every possibility to save money and energy. It’s intended to be a good guide and big help to you.
This book is divided into logical sections. The first chapter talks about sealing your home. It doesn’t matter how efficient your HVAC is if all the hot/cold air produced is flowing out of the house. You need to control the flow of the hot/cold air in and out of the house. This involves proper insulation, good sealing windows and doors, and cross flow ventilation.
Up to 55% of energy used in most homes is used to heat and cool the home. There are several ways to make your HVAC more efficient. There are ways to save that are simple and cheap. There are also ways that are complicated and expensive (but very good). We examine them in chapter 2.
Chapter 3 examines the next biggest energy user appliances and electronics. The first section talks about appliances. There are a lot of options to help you save energy and money. The second section talks about Electronics (Home Theater, TV, etc). Appliances and electronics use 30-40% of your homes energy. There are several options to save energy and money in these areas too.
Chapter 4 covers lighting. Lighting can use up to 15% of your energy. This chapter runs through the types of bulbs plus more. There is money and energy to be saved in this area also.
The rest of the book helps you in particular
