About this ebook

“God's Pinatas”
a Drama by: Phil Addis
Synopsis
It is a hot summer day in a small town. Two women are in a same sex marriage. RAVEN is an alcoholic, struggling with an abusive past. ROXY is married to Raven. The marriage is nearing it's finish line. Ultimatums need to be met.
ROSE is Roxy's Aunt. She lives with Roxy and Raven. She is in the stages of Alzheimer's. Her stay is seriously weighing on Raven and Roxy's relationship. Roxy is supporting an unemployed and alcoholic induced Raven. While Roxy is looking to get some solace, she suffers a nervous breakdown and must be admitted for medical evaluations and counseling. This leaves Raven and Rose to feud it out. Rose and Raven begin their familiar banter, clashing on every subject matter, especially religion. Raven drinks while Rose teeters in and out of lucidity,
Their neighbor, SUGI who was born and raised in Japan is convinced that he is Japanese, even though he is of Anglo Saxon decent. He is insistent on getting Rose out of this bad environment. Sugi has committed his love for
Rose and wants to marry her, leaving Raven alone. Rose reminds Raven; “It can be very lonely with one set of footsteps.”
After Rose moves in with Sugi, a very drunk and lonely Raven, plots a devious way to get Rose back into her life. Raven quotes Rose. “It’s part of the master plan.” She also needs to regain Roxy’s trust, so she can move back in.
Unbeknownst to Raven and Rose, they need each other.
Raven and Rose must confront the thief; Alcohol and Alzheimer’s. Raven realizes that it takes a whole lot of courage to stop drinking.
“Courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying, I’ll try again, tomorrow.”
A poignant, serious and funny, story. There is humor in tragedy.

I got interested in theatre when I was thirteen and became hooked. While attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, I studied acting and direction. I worked Off Off Broadway. Because my body needed food to survive, I moved back to La Crosse, WI. I met my wife in college. We married two years later. I have been doing theatre as a hobby since I moved back from New York City. Between jobs, raising and supporting a family, I have found time to write. I thank my wife for allowing me to ignore her as I write. My first draft had a public reading in 1990 at The La Crosse Community Theatre. This helped me with direction. I got to video tape it and learned so much from doing that. Although a play may never be finished, I have found myself at rest with this script. I had to shelf it and just accept, that for now, the script is complete. I consider this work a success. I completed a full-length play. This script is really about how much we need God, family and faith in humanity. Phil Addis

    ACT I

    SCENE ONE

(Morning. A hot summer day. The time is the present, in a small Midwest town. The entire play takes place in the BOWMAN residence. As the lights come up, ROSE opens the oven door and puts in a bag of apples. ROXANNE BOWMAN enters, looking on. She finally intervenes.)

    ROXY

Aunt Rose, what are you doing? Let’s put these in the fridge. I think we got more room. See... and they’re easier to get at. Enter RAVEN BOWMAN. On edge and stressed. Beer in hand. She crosses behind the couch. She sucks teeth at times when under stress.

    ROXY

Walking Rose to her room. C’mon now. Let’s go rest for a while.

    ROSE

I was only trying to help.

    ROXY

I know. You did fine, Aunt Rose. Thank you. Rose exits.

    RAVEN

What was she doing in the kitchen? You know she don’t belong in there.

Did you forget what happened last night?

    ROXY

Crosses to Raven. No, I didn’t forget. There are a lot of things I haven’t forgotten. And how long are you going to sit around before you find work? Unemployment will run out.

    RAVEN

As long as it takes, Rox, as long as it takes. Listen, we need to discuss Rose. The lady’s unstable.

    ROXY

    I’m becoming unstable. She’s scared, so stop it. Alzheimer’s isn’t a choice.

    RAVEN

You knew about her illness. Why would you do this?

    ROXY

Had I known then, what I know now...

    RAVEN

There’s times she appears OK and then...boom! It’s hell when you’re gone. Raven nudges up against Roxy. Foreplay. I miss you, babe...

    ROXY

I gotta work extra hours, no thanks to you. I’m not working these hours to have the house foreclosed. I don’t want the bank to be calling me at work. RAVEN begins foreplay. Roxy slips away and grabs a newspaper on the couch.

    ROXY

Here. I heard Spencer’s has an opening for a forklift operator. Go over there and fill out an application. Today.

    RAVEN

Forklifts jar my back. And their benefits are shit. No one ever stays there. You know nothing about it.

    ROXY

I know about work. You… you drink- get drunk... you pass out.

    RAVEN

See, I need you here. I can’t deal with all of this on my own. C’mon, how about a quickie? Raven kissing her neck.

    ROXY

No! Drinking isn’t the answer, Raven. You get upset with Rose living in the past... that’s just what you’re doing.

    RAVEN

    I’m working at it, OK.

    ROXY

    Working at it!

    RAVEN

I need time. You don’t forget things like that. My old man… The closer he came the further I ran.

    ROXY

How many years do you need, Raven? Drinking stirs your emotions. You need a doctor-counseling. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

    RAVEN

A drink and a doctor do the same damn thing. They fix what ails ya. And how can I talk about it if you’re never here? Raven nudges close to Roxy.

    ROXY

Because you’re always here. We need another income. I can’t do this alone. Raven, again, nudges up to Roxy. Stop it! I’m not the one who can help you. You need professional help.

    RAVEN

I have a problem talking to someone who knows nothin’ about me. Trying to tear my brain apart.

    ROXY

You don’t know them, they don’t know you, so.

    RAVEN

Easy for you to say. The next thing they’ll want to do is give me a frontal lobotomy. Raven, fondling Roxy.

    ROXY

    What are you doing? Geez!

    RAVEN

    C’mon...

    ROXY

Don’t! You need to be this assertive looking for work. You’d have a job by now.

    RAVEN

I said I’m looking for work. Pause. Roxy shaking her head in disgust. There’s that look. Now what?

    ROXY

    I don’t believe you’re looking for work.

    RAVEN

    You calling me a liar?

    ROXY

I don’t like to nag, but, what do you do, on top of going to work drunk... you piss in a garbage can because they wouldn’t put a bathroom at that end of the warehouse. What in God’s name were you thinking?

    RAVEN

Apparently I wasn’t, OK. Let it go. That was then.

    ROXY

Yes-but this is now. What happens when unemployment runs out? Honestly, have you been looking for work? And don’t lie.

    RAVEN

Yes. Things will work out. Don’t worry about it, OK. Roxy takes a few steps away from Raven.

    ROXY

Well... I am worried about it. You know, if it weren’t for Aunt Rose...

    RAVEN

Nervous. She moves closer to Roxy. What’s that supposed to mean?

    ROXY

Rose is a good person. She needs us now, more than ever.

    RAVEN

Glances at Roses bedroom. Because of her, we have no privacy. You always make her out to be the heroine. Sometimes, I swear that’s what she’s on. I’m tired of babysitting her. She laughs, reading the bible.

    ROXY

That’s her illness. Have you ever read the Bible?

    RAVEN

I was raised strict Catholic. Does that answer your question? You need to talk to Rose about the
