About this ebook

Our dating world has become ambushed by rules, dos, don’ts and so called ‘truths’ that enslave daters to behave in certain ways to avoid rocking the precarious relationship boat. We follow rules to determine if someone’s just not that into us, and abstain from calling under the assumption that commitment phobia is a gender specific epidemic. Well, this stops right now. This book is about reclaiming the facts, throwing the rule book out of the window, kicking our prejudices to the wind and opening our hearts so that the right relationship can find us.

From the notion that gentlemen prefer blondes, to why Fifty Shades of Grey is not a reliable guide to men, this book delves beyond the trivia, exposing the dating myths that cloud our thinking and hinders our chances. This unflinching, no holds barred myth buster says no to throwing men and women into boxes , gives sexual attitudes a makeover, and entices us to rub the dust of assumption from our eyes, and start enjoying the enthralling world of sex, love and everything in between.

    CONCLUSION

    INTRODUCTION

That’s men for you, That’s how women are, Of course. He’s that type of guy – these are all extensions of the word typical, and as a society, we love the word typical. From the beginning of evolution, we’ve been programmed to predict, presume and pigeon hole. Is that animal friend or foe? Is that caveman likely to shake my hand, or impale me with a spear? The last bear tried to steal my baby. This bear might well do the same. In modern times, despite the odd incidence of cannibalism, we no longer have to worry about whether our neighbors are out to ensnare us for our limbs, but nevertheless our animal instincts are still live and kicking. And nowhere more so than in the dating world.

I knew they’d do that, They’re so the type, He looks like a player, or She’s 35. She must be single for a reason. These are all assumptions that are well intentioned, and aimed to protect us from engaging in the wrong kind of relationships. But if we rely too heavily on our pigeon holing, we find that we struggle to let anyone in, and this structure we’ve carefully built to protect us can become a barrier, preventing us from engaging with anyone. Our expectations of people become lower and lower. And when we lower the expectation elevator down to the floor known as cynicism, we can turn around and realize this floor feels cold, lonely, and yet ever so stifling.

At the age of 25, I was the Queen of Presumption. If a guy approached me in a club, I would assume he was out to use me. If a woman was crying whilst drunk, I would assume it was a pathetic lament over a boy. If someone tried to sleep with me, I would assume they were disrespecting me. What I never assumed was that in people’s eyes, I was working my way into my own pigeon hole; prickly ice maiden. It took 4 more years of working the Queen of Presumption title for me to realize, this mind set was not working for me. The only men I ended up attracting were men who loved the chase, but not the catch. A friend once handed me a pearl of wisdom direct from her therapist. She declared, The Map Is Not The Territory.
