    Marco looked up at Heather from his laptop. She sat on a red microfiber beanbag thing – a LuvBall or some stupid, catchy, slightly sickening name – tearing away at the dry skin around the edge of her thumb nail. The light from the overcast sky outside their South San Francisco apartment lit her from behind, casting her face in deep shadow. Her dark, stringy hair fell on her thin shoulders.

    Yeah, I guess that’s it, she said. "I don’t disbelieve, I’m just not sure what to believe, you know?"

    Well, good atheists like me wish you agnostics would just make up your –

    The blinding flash of light came only a moment or two before the shock wave blasted through the wall, shattering the window and showering sheetrock everywhere in a powdery boom that threw them both to the floor in shock.

    What the? yelled Marco.

    Heather was screaming, curled up on the floor in the fetal position, covering her ears with her eyes shut tight.

    Marco looked out the gaping hole that used to be their outside wall as the dust started to settle. His ears were ringing and his vision was blurry but clearing up.
