About this ebook

Guide books or book notes are primarily written to make students understand the original text better, especially from all those angles which are often overlooked by a casual reader.

But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.

I would strongly advise all students to read the original text once again even if you have already read it, after reading this short treatise. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to give many new meanings to you.

All the best.

    Chapter One: About George Orwell

George Orwell was born Eric Blair in India, in 1903. For his education he was sent to England where he studied as a scholarship student at highly reputed boarding schools. Orwell often described his family as lower upper middle class, and about his experience in the boarding schools in England he said that he never quite fit in those schools, for they maintained dictatorial control over students. Orwell felt oppressed and outraged. In his books he has often mentioned about the rude hand which the schools’ administrators applied over the pupils.

He graduated from Eton and decided against further studies. He decided to work as a British Imperial Policeman in Burma, then a British Colony. Since the police force was supposed to strictly enforce the stern laws of the political regime which Orwell hated, he did not enjoy his duty as a policeman. His health began to deteriorate. He came back to England on convalescent leave. His health issues continued to trouble him all through his life. Having reached England, he quit the job of the Imperial Police Force and decided to become a full time writer.

Orwell was highly inspired by Jack London’s book The People of the Abyss which was published in 1903. He came to know about the experience in the slums of London. Orwell wanted to have that experience and know about the sufferings of the slum dwellers in London. He bought ragged clothes from old clothes store and went to live in the slums with the very poor people in London. Having experienced the life in the slums in London, he came back to the society and published a book titled Down and Out in Paris and London.

George Orwell was naturally very adventurous. After a few years he went to live with the destitute coal miners in northern England. This experienced changed his political views and he renounced capitalism decided to go for democratic socialism.

Orwell was very inquisitive about the lives of the people from the different
