New York Yankees IQ - Tucker Elliot

    INTRODUCTION

Think you know Yankees baseball? Think again. You’re about to find out how smart you really are about the New York Yankees. Are you a rookie? Are you a tested, hardcore veteran? Or will you be clearing waivers for your pending release halfway through the book?

    We’ll let you know.

Test your skills. Wrack your brain. It’s the ultimate New York Yankees IQ test. Five chapters, more than 250 questions—that’s what you’re up against, and we’re keeping score.

Think of chapter one as Spring Training, that magical time of year when everything just feels so right with the world . . . and, when everybody, even the veterans, gets back to the basics. That’s what you will find in the first chapter—50 questions every Yankees fan should know, five each in ten different categories: The Numbers Game, The Rookies, The Veterans, The Legends, The Hitters, The Pitchers, The Managers and Coaches, The Fabulous Feats, The Teams, and Miscellaneous.

In chapter two the season is underway and you’re expected to be in shape and ready to play, so be sure and fine tune your mad trivia skills in the first chapter, because when the big club breaks camp the last thing you want is to be left behind with the rookies. The categories are the same but the questions are tougher, and the standings count.

In chapter three find out if you make the All-Star team. You have to start the season strong and then maintain a high level of consistency if you want to be on our All-Star team—and chapter three will toss the wannabes like chaff in the wind.

In chapter four it’s the Dog Days of Summer. Can you make a push for the postseason or are you going to succumb to the pressure, unable to close the deal? We amp it up even more, and when the dust settles we’ll let you know if you’re deserving of chapter five.

You have to earn your way to chapter five. This is the postseason. This is where you will find trivia befitting a world champion. This is where legends are made. This is your Yankees IQ, the Ultimate Test of True Fandom.

    1 SPRING TRAINING

This is Spring Training mind you. We’re only stretching here. Just trying to get limber after a long winter of chips, couches, remote controls, beverages of choice, and the NFL . . . I mean, there’s no sense straining a groin or anything else right out of the box. So we’ll just start with some basics—a few of the legends honored by the Yankees with a retired jersey number. No point in sweating bullets over these questions. You don’t know these, well, you don’t know jack.

    The Numbers Game

Question 1: The Yankees official website calls this legend combative and daring, and a brilliant baseball strategist. To honor him the club retired his #1 jersey. Name this legend.

Question 2: The Yankees official website calls this legend baseball’s greatest slugger. This is like teeing up a beach ball, being asked to hit it with a tennis racket, and your only goal is to make contact—but don’t worry, it’ll get tougher. In the meantime, name this legend and the jersey number retired in his honor.

Question 3: The one word used to describe this player by the Yankees official website is durable. Yes, another beach ball (at least I hope). Not too many more of these, we’ll be done stretching soon. Name this legend and the jersey number retired in his honor.

Question 4: He was once married to Marilyn Monroe . . . and, he got to play for the Yankees. Name this legend and the jersey number retired in his honor.

Question 5: The Yankees official website calls this legend the most feared hitter on the most successful team in history. This is the last beach ball so you better enjoy it. Name this legend and the jersey number retired in his honor.

Gehrig played 13 games in 1923 and batted .423, and he played ten games in 1924 and batted .500, but his full-fledged rookie season was 1925 when he posted the lowest batting average of his career. Question 10: In 2005, Robinson Cano batted .297 with 14 homers as a rookie for the Yankees.
