About this ebook
But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.
I would strongly advise all students to read the original text once again even if you have already read it, after reading this short treatise. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to give many new meanings to you.
The present book introduces the author in details, provides analysis of the characters and themes, and includes the complete summary.
All the best.

Chapter One: Introduction of the Author
Harriet Ann Jacobs is regarded as one of the most widely read black writers in America. She was born on 11th February, 1813 in Edenton, North Carolina. She was born a slave.
She succeeded in escaping from slavery and after that she became an abolitionist speaker and social reformer. Her only book Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
was published in 1861 under the pseudonym Linda Brent.
The novel describes the struggle for freedom by female slaves. It is an autobiographical account. The book also describes how the female slaves were sexually harassed and abused by their white masters.
Chapter Two: Biographical Details
Harriet Jacobs had a brother named John S. Jacobs. Her father was a slave owned by Dr. Andrew Knox. It is said that Elijah, her father, was the son of an enslaved woman Athena Knox and a white farmer, Henry Jacobs. Her mother, Delilah Horniblow was an enslaved black woman. Her owner was John Horniblow, the owner of a tavern.
Since they were the children of slave parents, Harriet and John got the status of slave
from their mother. Harriet lived with her mother up to 1819. At that time Harriet was six years old. After that she began to live with her mother’s mistress Margaret Horniblow. The mother’s mistress helped her a lot and taught her how to read, write, and sew.
After the death of the mistress, Margaret Horniblow, in the year 1825, according to her will Harriet was to live with Horniblow’s five year old niece. The little girl’s father, Dr. James Norcom, became Harriet’s new master.
