About this ebook
WHEN YOU HAVE THE PROPER FOCUS, YOU CAN SEE THINGS CLEARLY
Focus is important. The better your focus, the more clearly you can see. But it is important that your focus be on the right thing because your direction will follow your focus. When your focus is clear and on the right thing, then you will be heading in the right direction.
The gospel of our faith is the good news that the kingdom of God has come and Jesus is the Messiah, God's anointed King. He is the focus of our faith — not only the One upon whom we fix our attention but also the One through whom we view the whole world, to see more clearly and understand God's purpose with greater wisdom. That is what Paul's letter to the Jesus believers at Colosse is about. This book is a study of that letter. In it you will learn about:
* The blessing and inheritance God has for you
* The divine power trio: faith, hope and love
* A walk that is worthy, a life that is pleasing and fruitful
* Knowing God more and more
* How all things hold together
* Where all divine fullness dwells
* The reconciliation of heaven and earth
* The good news of God's pleasure
* The revelation of divine glory in you
* Being rooted and built up in Jesus
* The powers that have been disarmed
* Living from a higher realm
* The Word that qualifies us
* Clothes for your new life
* New life at home and in the community of faith
* The spiral of watchful, thankful prayer
* Walking in wisdom
These are "bite-size" studies to help guide you through Paul's letter, a little at a time. At the end of each study are focus questions to help you think further about the truths Paul brings. They are open-ended questions to allow for maximum personal reflection and group discussion.

Introduction ~ Jesus Above All
crossesFocus is important. The better your focus, the more clearly you can see. But it is important that your focus be on the right thing because your direction will follow your focus. Focus on the wrong thing and it will lead you in the wrong direction. Fix your attention on the rearview mirror while you are driving and you might well end up in a ditch. But when your focus is clear and on the right thing, then you will be heading in the right direction.
The gospel of our faith is the good news announcement that the kingdom of God has come and Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah — which is to say, God’s anointed King. In other words, Jesus the Messiah is the focus of our faith. He is not only the One upon whom we fix our attention, but when we view the world through Him we will be able to see more clearly and understand God’s purpose with greater wisdom.
That is what Paul’s letter to the Jesus believers at Colosse is about. During his time of ministry in Ephesus (about ad 54-56), Paul sent Epaphras to Colosse, Laodicea and Hierapolis to proclaim the good news and establish the Church in that region. About five years passed and Paul received a good report about the Jesus believers there, who were mostly from among the Gentiles, but also some from the Jews. But there was also some disturbing news: False teachers were coming in to undermine the work of the gospel and pull believers away from their focus on the Lord Jesus.
Though we do not know exactly who and what these teachers and their doctrines were, they perhaps represented an early form of Gnosticism, a movement that influenced various churches during the early centuries. Gnosticism viewed the spiritual realm as pure but the physical world as inherently evil. Salvation was understood as an escape of the soul from the material realm through esoteric knowledge about the emanations
or hierarchies of divine beings that proceeded from God. Gnosticism seems to have developed as a blend of ideas, possibly from such sources as Jewish mysticism, Zoroastrianism, Greco-Roman mystery
religions and Neo-Platonic thought. Although it was not a distinctive movement until the second century ad, the ideas that gave shape to it were circulating a good while before that.
Paul does not define this false teaching for us and he does not particularly address it head on. However, we can make out some of the nature of this error by clues here and there in his letter to the believers at Colosse. It seems to have been a mixture of three things:
Jewish legalism — with an emphasis on things like circumcision, dietary laws, sabbaths and new moon celebrations (Colossians 2:16).
Pagan elements — according to the traditions of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ
(Colossians 2:8). The basic principles of the world,
particularly, seems to be a reference to pagan ideas of elemental spirits and hierarchies.
Christian veneer — These false teachers smuggled their legalist/pagan mixture into the church under the guise of Christian doctrine, but were actually exalting angelic hierarchies above Jesus.
Though this was not full-formed Gnosticism, it does appear to have had strong tendencies in that direction. For this reason, I refer to it in this book as gnostic,
with a small g
and used as an adjective.
As we work through this letter, we will see a number of in Him
and with Him
statements. It will help us see Paul’s point if we read them with emphasis on the word Him
(that is, "in Him,
with Him) to stand in strong contrast with the
basic principles of the world" and the erroneous emphasis on angels. This will also help us better understand, by a sort of mirroring technique, the error Paul addresses as he stresses its opposite, the all-encompassing truth God has revealed to us in the gospel: In and through Jesus the Messiah, God has accomplished everything that needs to be done in the world — He is all we need!
Paul’s letter is to the Jesus believers at Colosse but it is for Jesus believers in all times and places. So his teachings, instructions and prayers have application for us today. This book is a study of that letter and those teachings. It comes from a series I taught on Colossians in the Bible study group I have lead for over ten years. Teaching it live inspired me to expand on it in a series of blog posts at www.TheFaithLog.com. Now I have collected and edited them together into this present form (I believe in retasking
).
In my series of Jesus Believers* books, I make no distinction between those who believe in Jesus and those who follow Him. They are one and the same. Faith is not an abstract assent to a proposition, it is personal relationship with another person — the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who know Him, follow Him. That is what faith looks like.
Also, when I speak of believers,
I do not have in mind merely an assortment of individuals who have faith in the same Lord, I am thinking as much or more of the one body of which every believer is a part — the body of Christ — and how it is revealed in the local church (in this case, the body of believers at Philippi). There is both diversity and unity, and the interaction of the one and the many in the community of faith. All take part together as one. This is particularly significant as we go through Paul’s letter and see how he exhorts the believers at Philippi to work through their differences and come together with the same attitude that was demonstrated by the Lord Jesus.
These are bite-sized
studies to help guide you through Paul’s letter a little at a time. For the most part, they retain the shape and style of the blog (minus the typos). At the end of each study, I have added some focus questions to help you think further about the truths Paul brings. There is no answer key (except Jesus). I have purposely left these questions open-ended to allow for maximum personal reflection and group discussion.
My intent with this book, as with my blog, is to encourage you and stir up your faith to receive the wonderful promises of God and walk in the divine destiny He has for you. For many years now, my favorite verse, the one I come back to again and again, is Isaiah 50:4. The Lord God has given me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens me morning by morning, He awakens my ear to listen as a disciple
(NASB). That has been my desire with this project and, indeed, with all my writing and ministry — to sustain the weary one with a word.
* In addition to this present book, my Jesus Believers series also includes There is Always Joy: Paul’s Letter to the Jesus Believers at Philippi and Keeping the Faith When Things Get Tough: Peter’s Letter to Jesus Believers Scattered Everywhere.
Paul’s Letter to the Jesus Believers at Philippi
crossesTaken By Surprise
Paul, an apostle of Jesus the Messiah, by the will of God. (Colossians 1:1 JVD)
NOBODY was more surprised than Paul that he should be an apostle of Jesus the Messiah, and that this was the will of God. He had once been very violently opposed to Jesus and those who followed Him as Messiah. This was back when Paul was known as Saul.
As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison. (Acts 8:3)
Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. (Acts 9:1-2)
But then, of course, Saul had his Damascus road experience
— which was the original Damascus road experience. He had a dramatic encounter with Jesus. The story is told in Acts 9. As Saul came near the city, a bright light shone around him and he fell to the ground. He heard a voice speaking to him.
Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?
Who are You, Lord?
Saul asked.
I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
Lord, what do You want me to do?
Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.
Saul, his eyes blinded by that moment, continued on to Damascus, not knowing what would happen next. There was a man there named Ananias, whom the Lord Jesus directed to go to Saul, lay hands on him and restore his sight. Ananias did not understand why, because he had heard of how Saul had persecuted Jesus’ followers at Jerusalem. The Lord answered, Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.
Ananias went and Saul was healed. Immediately Saul went to the synagogues of Damascus and began to preach that Jesus is the Son of God. He became part of the very movement he had originally intended to rub out there. Now he himself became a target and the Jewish leaders plotted to kill him. But the believers helped him get away safely.
Saul went back to Jerusalem to join with the believers there, the ones he had once persecuted. But his former reputation was
