About this ebook

Special Forces soldier turned author, Colonel Mike Sanchez, survived the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan and converted his military experiences into a new career as an "inspirational" motivational speaker. But his heroic demeanor and outward confidence mask a burden he carries on the inside, the agonizing memory of two brothers with whom he served in the war. Caught off-guard at a public speaking event, Sanchez is compelled to expose the ghosts of his past and his searing memories of a bloody battle on a blasted Afghanistan hilltop where love conquered fear forever.

    Chapter 1

I guess it’s not professional for a so-called motivational or inspirational speaker (whichever term you prefer) to break down and cry like a baby in front of a packed audience. But it couldn’t be helped. And I suppose it pretty much ended my career in that line of work.

It was the last question. It got me, broke me and kept me from going on. It was just too much, even though I am a soldier and such things aren’t supposed to bother me. But every soldier knows some things are too difficult to dwell on, let alone share with strangers, especially an audience of crass, self-indulgent creatures who can never understand anyway. It’s just one of those things.

I was on a book tour, promoting my memoir, Faith for the Fight. I had written it as a lark, a catharsis and no one was more surprised by its success than I. It was a book about religious faith and my experiences as a Christian warrior serving in special operations. Most of the promotional events were at churches or before conservative audiences where I was expected to represent something noble, the old-fashioned, all-American Christian patriot. And whether I knew it or not, I was there to reassure them that our country was still led by such men. Under the best of circumstances it challenged my integrity, but if the audience were hostile, it was a real cross.

This was to be a cross day, one in which I would relive my experience with the Taylor brothers, Danny and Zack.

The final image of the two of them was seared into my memory, a stubborn scar refusing to fade. It was a sacred relic, one I clung to yet suppressed, secured, as it was, behind my indomitable will in a secret chamber of my heart. But somehow it always managed to work its way out to interrupt my otherwise charmed life, as it did today when I was thrust back to that place of sadness and pain.

This stop was in a Midwestern town I prefer not to name. Quaint,
