Journeys of Shattered Souls - Mandy Steinfeldt Crane

    Prologue

    ****

It was mid-afternoon on a scorching July day, the temperature burning up from the sun’s fever as Steve pounded the last nail attaching the rail back to the post. He tossed the hammer in the saddlebag, pulled out a handkerchief wiped the dripping sweat from his forehead. Then removed the cap and took a couple swallows of refreshing cool water from his canteen. I don’t know about you Blue, but how bout we get out of this sweltering heat. He said petting the head of his horse. The horse whinnied as if answering his question. Steve smiled scratching his ears; he took one last look around for any rails that had fallen from the fence. No doubt, his father would be checking later when he came back this way. Well boy, this was the only repair dad told me about. And if we leave now we can be back home in thirty minutes and that is after stopping by your favorite watering hole.

Steve cinched shut the bags and mounted his horse. He picked up the reins giving them a slight tug and made a clicking sound and the horse took off in a slow walk. With the sun and air being so hot, the risk of dehydration for either of them was high. Steve knew if he wanted to get them back safely then he could not over heat his horse, Blue Smoke. As much as he could not bear to live on this ranch for much longer, today he was glad that it was just him riding alone with his best friend. It gave him a chance to think about decisions that he needed to make about the direction his life was going. He looked out across the horizon, so peaceful and serene it was. With majestic mountain ranges in the distance, rolling hills, colorful flowered meadows and ice-cold mountain streams. The air always smelled of clean, crisp sweetness. So why would anyone want to leave a place of heaven’s perfection.

He knew of at least one who surely would not, and if he was to convince his girlfriend of two years then he had better have some good reasons. Instantly Jenna’s face visualizes in his mind making his heart skip a beat. He could almost bet that she would fold her arms across her chest the second his words leave his lips. He laughed out loud picturing all her quirks that drove him crazy but it was the way she gazed into his eyes that made him fall in love with her the minute she talked to him. The day they met, Jenna made him feel like he was the only one in the world and after that they were inseparable. He had never known feelings of love before.

He wanted to take charge and live out his dream. C’mon Steve, your eighteen now, you are an adult. You need to take on more responsibility if you want to be in charge of all this one day, He heard his dad tell him repeatedly However, these last few days proved to be more difficult then he thought. On one hand, he did not want to disappoint his parents and Jenna by telling them that he did not want to stay here and be a rancher. On the other, he could not bear the thought of not reaching for his dreams. If he chose to leave Wyoming and become an actor, in his mind, he knew that he would be doing it against his father’s wishes. He knew how disappointed and disproving his father would be over his choice.

Jenna, the one person that could help him to make the right choices was busy helping her mother this week with baked goods for the county fair coming up. Just then, they came up to a small creek and Steve jumped off Blue and led him down so he could drink. He walked over and leaned against a tree taking a small break. In that time, Steve’s mind wondered off and he began to imagine of what his life would look like if he chose the path of his dreams. He saw oceans of people, bright flashing lights, working with his idols. Red carpets, television and magazine reporters. He saw the life he wanted since watching Indiana Jones on the big screen. After that, he wanted to be the one everyone wanted to see on that big screen dodging punches, driving fast cars, rescuing beautiful women and living a life in the fast lane.

Unexpectedly he felt a cool nose on his face nudge him bringing him back from his Hollywood dream. He scratched the animal behind its ears, I take it you’re ready to go huh boy. Blue nudged Steve again, Okay… okay I’m coming. I know it’s hotter than blazes out here. He climbed back up and they took off. By the time, they reached the ranch Steve had made a decision and was going to stick by it. No, matter the consequences. He was so ecstatic about his decision that he could not wait to get back, tell Jenna, and then try to convince her to come with him. He came up on the barn as the horse came to a slow stop. He jumped off and came around to his friend, Another good day huh boy. You know I love when it’s just you and me alone riding out there. Unexpectedly, loud noises coming from the barn triggered Steve to turn to investigate it.

He put Blue Smoke in his pen, closed the gate, and walked through the door to the other side of the barn where the noises were coming from. He took one-step and froze in place. A few minutes passed by before he regained reality. He blinked to make sure that he had not suffered from hallucinations caused from dehydration. When his eyes reopened there, lying in the hay was Jenna with none other than his older brother…Toby.

All packed and ready to go eh, rang out the emotive voice of his father as Steve walked into the intense heat and vivid outdoors carrying the last of his bags. He set the medium sized luggage in the back of JB’s truck. Yes Dad, this is the last of it. He drew in a deep breath gaining his confidence.

So I guess… Steve paused and glanced around the ranch swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat. For a half a second he wondered if he was making a mistake by leaving his home. I guess it time to go, he said with a perforated heart and demolished mind the worst pain he has ever felt in his eighteen years. Without another word, opened the truck door and jumped in before anyone had a chance to change his mind about leaving at a young age to the big city. After a long sigh and a readjustment of his hat, something he did when he was bothered JB opened the door and climbed inside. Glanced at his son while starting the ignition and then looked straight ahead, as the truck lurched forward.

Between father and son as the afternoon sped by, they spoke few words. Steve with a clenched jaw trying desperately not to think of Jenna and Toby, their images of them together stuck on repeat in his mind. The shock and pain that tore through him when he walked into the barn and saw his girlfriend lying in the arms of his eldest brother; to see her eyes look at Toby the same way she would look at him. It was as she had ripped his life-force right out of him with her bare hands, handed it to Toby and the two of them played catch with his heart leaving him just an empty shell.

Occasionally his father would peer at his distressed son wondering what he could say to help ease the pain caused by the affair. He placed one hand on his shoulder; Steve shot a look in his direction. I know you think I’m running away like a coward. But I need to get away from here if I’m ever going to get passed what they did.

I don’t think you’re a coward Steven… but I don’t think you need to go all the way to Los Angeles.

You know why I’m going to LA and it isn’t just because of the affair. JB’s grip stiffened on the steering wheel at the recollection of the day that Steve had told them that he wanted to leave the ranch and become an actor. He already had one son struggling; trying to break into movies, the thought of another was almost too much to bear. He wondered if Toby was strong enough to operate such a large ranch. They both could feel the tension begin to form inside the cab Steve knew that his father was upset with his decision but knew that if he didn’t try to pursue his dream of acting then his life wouldn’t be worth anything. Steve opened his mouth to speak when the airport came into view.

He closed it to stare out the window hoping that from this moment on his life would be less ordinary. They arrived at the passenger drop off where they both got out of the truck. Steve grabbed both bags while his dad picked up the last one and set it on the curb. Steve gazed down to look at the concrete sidewalk not knowing how to tell his father goodbye as JB’s eyes peered everywhere but at his youngest son’s face. A few awkward moments ticked by before either of the men spoke finally biting the bullet Steve heard his father clear his throat and prepared for one last lecture.

However to his surprise his father reached out and hugged his son tightly while his voice was filled with a strange tone but firmly replied, Steven, I don’t like you going off to do this acting thing but I want you to remember when the roads get long or you get lost in the middle …Wyoming will always be waiting. JB released him, handed him a credit card, Here, just in case you need a little something, and left Steve standing on the sidewalk with a dumbfounded expression as he watched him drive away. After realizing he might miss his flight he put his bags on the cart, went inside to check in.

For the hours he waited, before his plane took off Steve sat going over all the reasons why he should not take out his phone to call Jenna. In that split second he went to retrieve, his phone Toby’s image resurfaced in his memory, instantly looked up her number, and erased it from the phones directory, just then he heard the flight number for boarding. He rose from his dismal grey colored bench with his ticket in his hand, walked a few feet to get in line to board the whole time wondering if eighteen-year-old Steve Remington could make his dreams come true and become successful. He turned around one last time to quietly say goodbye to the only place he had ever called home, smiled, and marched forward to board the plane. "Good bye Steve Remington and hello Logan Chase," He thought as he handed over his ticket.

Six years later with a dull and dreary afternoon in downtown Los Angeles, the sun was playing hide and seek, Logan Chase dashed his way through the enormous crowd that had gathered there. They watched him walk from his long shiny black stretched out limo to the entrance of the restaurant hoping that they could get their picture taken with him, touch his hand or for just a mere glance in their direction. Badge of Honor just premiered a month ago and from the giant sized gathering that was increasing in size every second, Logan knew that his new movie was an instant success like so many of his movies were.

He made his way through the earsplitting crowd brushing some of the hands before entering the eatery, even stopped for a few quick snap shots and giving some lucky fans a quick hug. He waved goodbye to the gathering and disappeared into the building. The host escorted him to his usual table that was by the tinted glass, which was one of the reasons why he liked this place.

Logan had not even sat down for five minutes before someone stood by his table with a smile on their face. Are you ready to order or should I come back in a little bit Mr. Chase, said the beautiful server with a slight tremble in her voice. He looked at her, returned her smile, I need a few minutes if you don’t mind but, you could bring me a coffee. It’s a little breezy today; need something to warm me up. She nodded her head then disappeared. He noticed how hungry he was when he looked over his menu. He had a very light breakfast and it had been a very busy and long morning. He found what he wanted and waited for her to come back.

He looked at his watch to see how long he had to eat before heading for yet another interview. So far, his morning filled with a photo shoot that began very early and then followed up by an interview with a syndicated TV show and then over to a couple magazine companies for his last two interviews of the day. He stared out through the dark colored window and looked across the street at all the people that were outside eating lunch. For a split second, he felt a wave of jealousy wash over him, wishing he could be transparent as those people are. Out of nowhere, the sun broke through the clouds. He scanned across the sea of people, looking for anyone that he might recognize.

Suddenly his eyes came across a stunningly beautiful tall brunette that was hurrying down the street as though she was late for an appointment. Something about this girl begins to draw him in as he sat their magnetized somehow by her. Unexpectedly Logan felt his pulse quicken. He begins to feel short of breath, his mind becomes scrambled, his entire being focused as he continues staring at her, his eyes taking all of her in. Everything and everyone else vanish.

He was so fixated on her that he did not notice that the pretty server was back and stood patiently waiting for him to order. Finally, her voice registered through breaking his trance, he looked at her, I’m sorry about that. Now what was it you said? She sighed smiled politely, I asked you if you were ready to order now, and here is your coffee. He flashed a smile and replied warmly, telling her what he wanted. He watched as she took down his order and smiled before leaving. He recognized the look she had before she turned to leave; he knew that she was thinking that he must be some kind of nut job.

Logan took a sip of coffee and immediately his thoughts and eyes quickly went back across the street. He watches as this woman enters the restaurant across the street and sets down with two other women. Without any rhyme or reason to what he was doing, he abruptly pulled out his cell to call his agent. He could feel something powerful pulling at him drawing him closer and closer over powering any room for rational thinking. It was as if someone had put him in a rocket ship and shot him into space without giving him any controls; because what he did next would have made any normal human being wonder just how insane a person do you have to be to act on an impulse. Without any thinking of any kind, Logan stood up grabbed his coffee and left for the back of the building.

He waited by the back door of the restaurant until he spotted his agents car. Got in and slouched down into the seat, hoping that his plan would work and he could get by undetected. I think you are totally losing it Logan. To try and change places to eat just because of some chic you saw, Alex replied looking at him.

Something in his friends tone did not sit too well with him, Hey she is not just another chic. Something about this one is different. I don’t know how to describe it, he answered back not knowing why he wanted to meet this woman himself so how does he explain it to anyone else, there was just something he could not put his finger on, just that special something. His mind raced back to the day he called off his wedding to Heather. Back in that time and place where the pain that he carried from their break up was one of the major factors on why he made movie after movie. He continuously worked from sun up to sun down suppressing all of his emotions, where the emptiness in his heart fortified the walls surrounding it enduring cold lonely nights with long dejected days. When slowly over four long solitary years did, he began to realize the faded dullness in his heart was now vibrant shades of color! Suddenly Alex’s voice brought him back.

Sorry Logan, keep your head down, we are almost there. Here you are going to need these. The sun is finally out and is brutal.

He retrieved the sunglasses and put them on, Thanks Alex, it was so busy this morning that I forgot mine.

Of course you did. Good luck. He chuckled as he watched his friend duck into the doorway. Luckily, for him he got in there unscathed. Alex just shook his head thinking that his friend was mental and went to find a parking space.

Logan made it inside undetected and asked the host whose smile told him that she knew who he was to put him at a table just behind the trio. He sat down in the direction that gave him a clear view of her. He sat there studying her, watching her every smile, laugh, hand gesture, and movement. When she took a sip or ate a bite, she mesmerized him. He had been around plenty of women who were beautiful; some were actors, models, make-up artists, designers, but he cannot remember any time where a stunningly gorgeous woman could make him act and feel like this. He has never acted this erratic before not in his entire life.

Chaos suddenly erupted everywhere thanks in part to Alex’s handy work, he watched as reporters and camera crews flooded more of the streets; it looked as if a swat team was closing in on their suspect. His eyes shot back to her image and worry appeared across her face. He notes that she looked afraid and was shaking her head back and forth conveying with conviction that she did not want to go somewhere. Wishing he could have super hearing so he would know why she was saying no and to what. He watched her friends sit back in their seats and began to hold more conversations.

It has been about a half an hour since Logan’s attention had been on the three girls at the middle table. As they stood from the table, he had this strange impulse to go over, introduce himself, and ask her for a date before he lost his chance and she disappeared. He began to get up when he observes the three of them hugging and then the two friends leave. He followed them out with his eyes and then rebounded back to her. There she is all alone, now is your chance, he thought to himself. He watched her for another ten minutes more captivated by the way; her face appeared in the sunlight. He has never seen anyone or anything more breathe taking.

Without any hesitation Logan already up and walking towards this jaw dropping vision that was in front of him. As he moved closer, he noticed her closed eyes; he sat down and devoured the scent of her intoxicating perfume, a fragrance he had smelled a hundred times, her scent mixing up his already scrambled senses, rendering his ability to speak useless. Finally, rest assured that he has just met the rest of his life and feeling confident; Logan smiled and opened his mouth, wanting so very much to get to know the girl that emancipated his wounded heart.

    Chapter 1

    ****

Now why don’t we see what we can be together? Still echoed in his mind, those words, those precious words, she so lovingly whispered in his ear. He understood just how close he had come to losing her and appreciated the fact that she gave him a second chance. Now that they were back, living in Los Angeles, with Caitlin finishing her last year of college, and he reading scripts, looking for his next movie. Life was faster and more chaotic then it had been all summer. In between her studying for tests, doing research, homework and he meeting with different producers pitching him their latest scripts. They did not get a chance to see each other very often, which is why he cherished every moment spent with her.

Tonight was the big premiere of ‘The Magic Mile Murders.’ He was so over the moon that Caitlin would be at his side tonight in Chicago filled him with a new kind of nervousness, exhilaration and energy, after all this was the city that brought them together. He thanked the lord for friendly neighbors. After that, the next big doing would be her graduation in the spring.

It was still a couple hours until they were to walk the red carpet, the anticipation of seeing her saturated his already charged up atmosphere. This being Caitlin’s very first time in front of the media and him with someone other than his publicist on his arm made him take extra measures to make sure she felt safe and protected. Her comfort and happiness was his utmost and only priority.

At this moment, he was doing everything to keep from going insane. His mind already jumbled, heart racing like a racehorse at full gallop. Palms sweaty, as if he had ran them under a facet, legs feeling like he was walking in jelly and as breathless as finishing the hundred yard dash. Steve… you need to calm down… Tonight will be perfect you will see. Catie is strong. Trust me she will be everything you need her to be, Ester replied helping him with his tie. There…now you are perfect and so handsome. She kissed the top of his head.

Thank you Grandma…I just don’t want anything to happen to my beautiful Catie. I know she is strong but I also know how the paparazzi can be, when you’re not used to the craziness. He replied anxious but then a large smile formed, Plus I cannot wait to see her. I can only envision in my mind how beautiful she is going to be but my mind cannot do justice to her beauty.

She stood in her bathroom; hands awkwardly held on the sink doing their best to steady her, Caitlin was busy going through her deep breathing exercises. She was nervous about walking out into public to let the whole world know that she was with one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. The one and only Logan Chase, their secret that they had tried so hard to keep under wraps all summer long. Now the time had come to let the world in on it, to go public.

Tired from her inability to sleep from the night before because of the fear, anticipation and buzz for tonight’s premiere. Something she knew she would never forget for the rest of her life. But the nerves of weather she could be strong enough to handle the pressure from the camera flashes, swarms of paparazzi buzzing around her and Logan when they got out of the limo was what concerned her the most.

She never had to deal with any of this until she met and decided to give Steve another chance. Then the question of whether she could live this sort of lifestyle was something she had to answer for herself. She rather got a taste of it the night she had her exhibition but she knew that her boyfriend’s movie premiere would be ten times larger.

Another long breath, I can do this…I will be just fine. Steve will not let anything happen. That’s it Cate….deep breath in and…slowly breath out. Focus…that’s it.

Suddenly Cate noticed her grandmother in the doorway about to burst, Oh Caitlin…you look so beautiful. Are you sure you’re being fair to Steve?

Caitlin tilted her head in confusion to look at her grandmother, Fair? Ellie came inside the room, placed her hand tenderly on her granddaughters shoulder, Yes dear… you’re so stunning that you might take all the attention away from your boyfriend.

With a sarcastic smile and eyes shining like diamonds, Gran…I don’t think that will happen. Steve well Logan is the star and so handsome that he makes everyone drop everything just to stare at him. I couldn’t possibly even compare to that.

Well, not tonight sweetheart. You both will be beautiful like a rainbow after a thunderstorm in summertime. Just look at yourself. You are a vision of beauty.

Ellie turned her granddaughter so she faced the mirror and made her look at herself in it. Caitlin looked herself from head to toe. She wore a beaded satin wine colored floor length evening dress with a sweetheart neckline and spaghetti straps. The lace up back and beaded embellishments on the front of the dress was what made Caitlin fall in love with it.

She had been to every store in Los Angeles and was about to give up when a last minute stop at a store she does not usually shop in caught her eye. She walked in and there it was. Walking over to the rack she held it up and instantly knew that was the dress she had been looking for. You see my dear… you are dazzling. It really isn’t fair.

Caitlin turned to face her, Gran… you are biased.

That may be true dear but I’m not the only one who will think so now am I. I think a certain good looking gentleman will fall off his rocker when you come walking out.

Caitlin just laughed, Oh Gran…I love you.

She leaned over hugging the one who raised her. Oh honey…I love you too.

Caitlin looked into her grandmother’s eyes that now glistened with love, happiness, and pride. What is it now…Why are you crying?

These are happy tears I promise you. I was just thinking about when you first got here last summer…and now you’re with Steve err Logan umm Steve and tonight is his big movie premiere and my beautiful granddaughter is his date. Everything’s as it should be. Caitlin expression softened Ellie could see the glow in her granddaughters face. Well I better let you get back to whatever it was you were doing. Oh, you have about an hour before Steve…Logan err Steve gets here. They shared a quick laugh at her grandmother’s silly behavior and Ellie quickly hugged her again and left her alone in the bathroom with the tiny butterflies forming once again."

Caitlin turned back facing the mirror to check on her hair. She decided to go with a unique style then what she had for the museum exhibition. She was a little scared because Steve had never seen her hair like this. Furthermore, she did not know if this would be an acceptable hairdo for the red carpet.

The top combined with the sides were delicately French braided curving into her crown while the rest of it swept high off her neck with tiny ringlets pinned up just underneath the braid. A few loose strands hung twisted at the side of her face. Finished off with diamond-studded earrings and matching bracelet that Steve had given her. One last glance in the mirror and Caitlin felt she was finally ready to stand next to her boyfriend. She grabbed her matching shoes and headed down the stairs keyed up. She hit the top of the stairs when she remembered she had forgotten her purse.

Drat…never fails I always seem to forget something, She exclaimed walking back to her room. The sound of the doorbell rang out Steve’s arrival causing her already accelerated heart to speed up even faster.

She began slowly descending the stairs carefully placing her foot on each step making sure it was all the way on so she would not fall as every nerve ending in her body instantaneously heightened when Steve’s cologne amplified her senses about half way down forcing her to speed up.

Steve had been standing in the living room talking with Clayton and his grandfather when the sound of Caitlin’s high-heeled shoes popping along the wooden floor echoed her arrival. Clayton and George stopped in mid-sentence forgetting their topic of conversation. Steve, his eyes followed his grandfather’s gaze turned as his pulse rocketed; breathe almost nonexistent, mind immediately blank at the exquisite vision of loveliness that stood in front of him. His mouth went dry as the words he tried to speak jumbled together, not to mention the scent of her perfume doing its part to drive him almost to the point of obsession.

In an instant he moved towards her, falling more apart the closer he got to her. My god Caitlin…you are... he froze unable to come up with the right word when in his mind, beautiful, stunning, and dazzling and ravishing didn’t do her justice. You are so beautiful and this dress is gorgeous on you. You shine brighter than the sun.

I would have to say the same thing about you. When I came in and saw you in your tuxedo. I think my heart quit beating for a second and I lost my breath…and how great you smell… all I can say is yummy, Caitlin replied grinning and pretended to cool down by fanning her hand causing him to chuckle.

Oh my…look at the two of you. I would say you are ready for the premiere tonight. Both of you look dazzling, echoed Ester’s voice from behind her husband.

A suddenly bright flash in front of them temporarily blinded them. Steve leaned into her, Oh no paparazzi already, Oh, who is it getting us ready for the red carpet. Steve said with a smile.

Blinking to regain their vision, they noticed the camera in Ellie’s hand. Smirking Cate looked to Steve. My grandmother...

Next time remember to say cheese.

So handsome you are Steve and my darling Catie…gorgeous, her grandmother answered with a second round of tears.

    Not again Gran…Please don’t cry.

She glanced at her grandfather hoping he would intercede. I told you these were happy tears. Okay one more picture and then you two better get going. George snapped one with Caitlin, Steve and her grandparents.

Steve and Caitlin looked to one another, So much for just one more huh.

She chuckled, Yeah reminds me of prom night. When someone suggested two more pictures one with his family and then just the two of them.

They gathered in the backyard awaiting the arrival of the limo. Steve had given very specific instructions for the limo driver to pick them up in the back. That way Logan’s feeble attempt to hide his identity stayed hidden from the neighborhood. Within a couple of minutes Ester noticed the long shiny black stretched out limousine slowly making its way to Clayton and Ellie’s driveway. Once it stopped the driver appeared opened the door and stood patiently waiting for the two to get in. After a few more hugs and kisses Caitlin climbed inside followed by Steve. The driver then closed the door, strolled back to his side, climbed in, and slowly drove away.

The car hadn’t even been moving five minutes when Steve’s lips were passionately moving over hers finally succumbing to her beauty and intoxicating perfume that sent his mind into a continuous spin while his heart burned for just one more kiss. Hands sliding from her warm cheeks slowly downward to her neck caressing the soft delicate skin out to her shoulders as the heat from his touch intensified into an inferno. Just as his hands reached her waist, he pulled her closer while her purse slipped into the seat as her arms encircled around his neck from the fever of the kiss that sent them into near rapture and made the temperature in the car swelter.

Slowly their breathing and pulse returned to normal, as normal as it is when their together, as well as their ability to think and speak clearly a short time later Steve handed Caitlin back her purse and settled into the seat but never took his arm from around her. She glanced around at the large luminous, clean interior that smelled like citrus. The brilliant luster of the chrome buttons that fitted into the burl wood grain shining in the car intrigued her. She had never seen that many buttons in one place.

There had to be a separate button for the radio, television, and center window and moon roof, not to mention the other windows in the car and for whatever else. The seats, shiny black leather finish confirmed by her touch. To the left of her she noticed a mini bar and below it hung the champagne glasses. To the right bright neon aligned the top illumining the other small black couch and small television and the floor a dark black carpet that was immaculate.

The windows were tinted either as dark or darker then the carpet. It’s a lot to take in isn’t it, Steve asked playing with the loose strand of her hair.

Smiling wildly she replied her voice shaky, Yes it is. I’ve never been in a limo before.

Steve looked around, You get used to it… he stared her straight in the eyes, …After a while. Do you want some Champaign or something to drink?

Yes I would….maybe it will help with the nerves. After opening the bottle and pouring some, he handed Caitlin her glass. She took a sip, Ahh…that’s better…I guess I didn’t realize how thirsty I was. Taking a long sip when she looked out the window, it became evident that they were getting close to the city that held the premiere. Quickly finishing the rest of her drink, Caitlin glanced at her boyfriend as her anxiousness became obvious. Thinking now would be the perfect time; Steve reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a gold rectangular box placed it in her hands causing her to stare at him. What is this, she asked looking at it. Grinning, Open it and find out."

    Steve…what did you do now?

    Would you just open it?

Out of character, her fingers began savagely ripping into the delicate paper wrapped around the package as her eyes encountered the item inside. In an instant, she stared at her date speechless.

I wanted to give you something that gave you strength tonight. Do you like it?

Her eyes slipped back, Yes I absolutely love it. Where did you find it? Because I have never seen anything like this it’s so beautiful.

After taking it out and placing the necklace around her neck, Cate, I had it made for you. No one else has anything like it so it’s a one of a kind, like you are. After hearing his words her hand instantly shot up to touch the diamond heart shaped necklace. She could feel the letters that were inside the heart. She traced the c and then the s with her finger. It’s just gorgeous Steve. How did you come up with this?

After she thanked him with a quick kiss, I wanted to give you something that would make you feel stronger but also a symbol of us. You notice that the c is made of emeralds and the s of rubies, our birthstones.

Suddenly Caitlin and Steve spotted the spotlights searching the night sky in crisscrossing beams, the crowds of people that had lined up behind barricades and around the red carpet awaiting the arrival of their idols. The sea of reporters, camera crews, and paparazzi aligning the street and alongside the red carpet as the limo pulled up fifth in line to the theater with the screams and waves of glaring lights alerting Caitlin that their private time was running short. She looked down at the floor wondering if she had the strength that needed to continue the relationship that she and Steve had.

    Chapter 2

    ****

Steve firmly placed a hand under her chin and ever so gently tilted it up to look into her eyes. His voice loving and serious however the more he spoke the more she could detect the worry in it. Caitlin...I want you to know that after we get out there…if at any time you start to feel those anxious tendencies creep up. He held her hands in between his, Please tell me and we will get out quickly. I don’t care about anything else…you are my only care and concern. He gazed into her eyes searching for her state of control, the world outside soon vanished away like a puff of smoke.

Her eyes fixated on his, she began to run her hand over his clean-shaven face feeling the smoothness warmth of his skin under her fingers tips. They came across his mouth, biting her lower lip; she traced his lips as her eyes found their way back to his, the exhilarating smell of his cologne swirling through her taking her even higher. She stole a glimpse of the outside and looked back to him. For the very first time it suddenly hit her.

Like a blink of an eye, Steve’s persona changed right in front of her. Like a chameleon, the transformation was stunning and complete; her Steve was now her Logan.

She didn’t know if it was the noise, the swarms of people, cameras, news crews or what it was but Steve no longer appeared like Steve but rather Logan sitting in his tux looking handsome next to her and she had just kissed those lips and touched his face. She understood that he was still the same person but, all the time that they spent together in Chicago for the summer and now in Los Angeles it was always Steve’s face that Caitlin saw and not Logan’s. I guess it is easy to only associate to one of the identities when the other one only comes out when called upon.

Blinking to see if Logan was still the image in her eyes when the rushing of her pulse and shortness of breath gave her the answer she was looking for, knowing that they were on borrowed time feeling the anticipation in the air of whether or not she could indeed handle it. The time had come for Logan to step out of the limo with his woman on his arm.

He had moved and was sitting on the other side of her, so when the door opened he could shield her from some of the chaos. This is it my love–time for the spectacle to begin.

With uncertainty and worry in her eyes and voice shaking from fear, Before we go…I want to make sure …I call you Logan right... Of course, no one else calls you Steve because no one knows it is your real name. Sorry that was a stupid question… here I am babbling to myself

He flashed his famous smile touching her cheek, Honey… it will be okay, I love you anyway, babble as much as you want. He said with a confident smile, inside he was not so sure. He could see just how nervous she was

The rest happening to her in slow motion or that was how it felt anyway. He leaned over kissed her preserving the last minutes of their tightly held secret. The door opened, he stepped out waved to the crowd as the screams and shrills went into deafening levels. Turned with his hand held out for his love to grab onto, with a racing heart, missing breathe and palms sweating. Caitlin grabbed his hand as he helped her from the car, linked her arm through his as concern expressed on his face.

While standing in the center of the carpet grinning from ear to ear as the millions of flashes blinded their eyes, Caitlin felt as if the sun had exploded right in front of her. Look here Logan…That’s good…Now here…Over here…Fantastic…Now over here, came the voices from the magazine, television, and camera crews. She did not know which way she was supposed to look when they were all asking for different poses. And not only were the flashes hard to get used to but the high pitched screaming from the fans was definitely one item on the top of the list of fast annoyances. She stared around at the sea of faces, nosily waving their hands wildly in the air. She glanced at her beau and just as Catherine had explained to her all those months ago Caitlin could now see what she meant about how being on the red carpet was an experience all on to itself.

After the initial shock started to wear off Cate showed signs of just how much control over herself she had. It was just after one of the many interviews that Caitlin noticed that Logan seemingly still worried about her was having a hard time answering simple questions. They were on their way to one of the last reporters before heading inside the theater when she pulled him aside. Placing her hands on either side of his face holding it, staring into his eyes, Logan…you’re going to be alright…look into my eyes…breath slower…in…out… She pretended to follow her own advice as a large smile came across her face.

Shaking his head as he smiled at how silly he had been. Stealing a kiss, they walked hand in hand to the next reporter and prepared themselves for the same line of questioning. Caitlin grinned at the blonde reporter wearing too much makeup, as her attention focused on her man. Hi Logan, Michelle from Hollywood Access Life: First of all you look amazing… Congratulations on the new movie…it’s going to be another block buster."

Thank you Michelle. I hope so. I’m really proud of how it turned out and can’t wait for my fans to see it.

Now I’m sure everyone else at the premiere tonight has asked you the same question. Just who is this lovely woman that is standing beside you Logan? She asked holding the microphone close to his face.

Logan glanced at her, grinned before he turned his attention so he could answer the question for the millionth time. This beautiful woman is my girlfriend Caitlin.

Turning the attention to her, Caitlin, It’s a pleasure meeting you… Who are you wearing because this dress is gorgeous and what is it like dating a handsome movie star?

Steve watched as her face flushed with a rosy color but also glowed with a new excitement as she did her best to answer her questions. After replying to a couple more, Logan waved one last time to the fans before leaving the red carpet going inside the theater. Man I bet Jessica, Sara and Caroline is going crazy right about now, She whispered in his ear feeling exhilarated.

There was high anticipation, excitement, enthusiasm and eagerness inside the theater as there was outside. They followed down a corridor that ended behind the stage where Logan’s costar also waited. Caitlin peeked through the heavy orange covering behind the big screen, looked around at the buzzing crowd that was waiting for the spectacles to begin. I will be right back, she said to Logan and after finding where the powder room was and left to go use it.

She had taken a few steps when it occurred to her that it would be the first time she would not be standing next to him holding hands since arriving at the theater. She found the room and dashed inside. Hey man… where is your woman at tonight, asked Bryley in his easygoing Australian accent searching around the room. Couldn’t she make it?

Hey Bry, Cate is here. She should be back in any second, answered Logan as his heart pounded at the very thought of her.

Joining in on the conversation Julie strolled up and stood by her costars, Can you believe the crowd in here and outside…crazy. Both of her good-looking friends smiled and looked to her.

Bryley ran a hand through his dark brown hair, Hey Jules…Yeah its complete chaos. Nevertheless, lover boy over here is used to this much madness. This is how everyone reacts to him, but for me…its completely crackers and I love every minute of it.

All Logan and Julie could do at this point was smile and laugh. Since they filmed the last scene last October and it had been seven months since they last talked to their costar, they both had forgotten how funny he could be. Logan had gotten used to coming to the set every morning where Bryley’s Ausie humor would come through, as he would say something humorous.

Caitlin had finished drying her hands, after tossing her paper towel in the garbage she stepped out of the bathroom. Scanned around the large dimly lit area her eyes immediately spotted Logan. She took a moment, staring at him watching his every smile, laugh, hand gesture. She continued to stare mesmerized by this gorgeous man standing over there with a hand in his pocket not a care in the world, his face beaming with jubilation, his body language showing off his confidence, poise, and laid-back nature. She just could not help herself; she just kept right on staring, enamored with him, and could not seem to get enough.

Logan… She heard someone call him by his name. Her eyes never leaving his attractive face and all at once it hit her. She was here at his movie premiere, not as a guest of a friend or the winner of a radio contest but as his girlfriend. ‘I am Logan Chases woman,’ she told herself. Something she used to fantasize about and teased. Nevertheless, here she was she flashed back to the ‘Badge of Honor’ premiere. Where Jessica, Sara and herself stood outside the theater in Los Angeles for hours and hours, waiting for this gorgeous man to show up, and then when he did… she fell to pieces because of her panic disorder at the sight of him.

Suddenly his clear crystal blue eyes, even more luminous found hers sending shivers all along her body. The hairs on her arm stood on end as if electrical currents were surging through them. She felt like one of a pair of magnets drawn together with Logan the matching force pulling her ever closer by his magnetism. Giving her a reminder that she was not dreaming any of this, it was real. She was in fact there with him.

Logan watched as his ravishing girlfriend slowly walked back to where he stood. The feminine walk only a confident woman had the sway of a seductress, so fascinated by the look in her eyes that Caitlin was the only person he saw in the room. Captivated by the way her body seemed to move in slow motion as everyone around them stopped to stare. His heart flamed with passion and desire. He saw his whole world in her eyes and as long as she was standing by his side, he knew he could do or be anything, that he could conquer the world. She had a new bounce in her step; she oozed self-confidence it radiating from her when she walked. He kept thinking as long as she is in my eyes tonight.

Hello gorgeous … Crikey, you are bit of a sparkler Cate, Bryley exclaimed as she arrived at Logan’s side making her blush. She felt his fingers wrap around hers.

Hello Bryley…Thank you for that and you’re rather dashing also and Jules… you look amazing.

Thank you. I have to ask…where did you find your dress it’s so beautiful.

I found it in East Los Angeles at one of those clothing stores you never think to go into. Because you’re thinking that the store wouldn’t have any dresses for special occasions.

Bry glanced at the leading man leaned into him whispering, Bloody hell you lucky bloke…you better not let her get away.

Logan glanced at her, winked, and then looked back, I don’t think that is ever going to happen. I will not let it happen!

With a comical expression, You would be a bloody fool if you did, replied Bryley looking from Julie to Caitlin.

While he watched as the two women talked about clothing. He began to see something. Okay mate…I have to know something, Bryley asked puzzled by the uncanny resemblance.

Everyone stopped and focused on his face. What is that Bry?

Staring straight at Logan, C’mon mate, you can’t tell me that you don’t see it?

He glanced at his costar and girlfriend and then back to the younger actor, Umm…now what is it that I am missing here?

Catie and Jules…look at them…bloody hell mate, they could be sisters…you aren’t… are ya?

Cate and Jules looked to one another and then at Logan and Bryley stunned by his comment.

No we are not sisters…just good friends, Julie answered smiling at her. With all the worry about how Cate was, going to handle tonight it did not even dawn on him that the resemblance between them was stunningly similar. Logan flashed back to the day that Julie came on set to begin filming a certain scene and she appeared so much like Cate that it threw him for a loop, so much that he left the set to go find her. They reconciled that day. I saw it on set one time but had forgotten about it until now, Logan finally answered giving her hand a squeeze. Yes there are similarities and it sort of threw me too.

Julie then piped in, Sort of…my dear sweet Logan you ran off the set that day. She turned and looked at Cate as if she was talking but also laughing only to her. It was the weirdest reaction I ever saw. I come out in costume and on Logan’s face… an expression that looked as though he saw a ghost or something…. and then he just took off…no word…nothing…but gone…like a puff of smoke.

Well I had very important business that needed to be done and it couldn’t wait any longer, Logan answered looking at his girlfriend deep in the eyes making her tingle. The soft expression in her eyes and smile let him know they she knew what he was talking about. After Jules changed the subject, they continued talking to one another catching each other up on what projects they were doing.

Abruptly the screams, yells, and whistles from the patiently awaiting crowd instantly reached frenzied levels caused everyone to look at one another. So are we ready for this show to begin…what are we waiting for? I don’t know how much longer we can keep this crowd under control, Julie asked a little startled at how loud it was becoming.

A stage manager happened to walk by and was able to answer her question, If you all are ready to go then I say… it’s Showtime. He glanced at Caitlin, Ready…? When she nodded, he handed her a microphone, Just give me the sign, and I will signal the stage hand to raise the curtain.

While taking in a deep breath she noticed the surprise on everyone face but Logan’s especially. He literally appeared panicked.

What…I thought I would do the introductions for you, answering as if it was no big thing.

Walking out of ear range, Are you sure Catie…I mean…This is a gigantic step for you. Are you sure you won’t have a panic attack or become anxious after walking out there and seeing the large crowd all by yourself, he replied with concern in his voice but was also very touched by her endeavor.

She softly smiled, Honey…I will be absolutely… positively one hundred percent….fine. Trust me I can do this and I want to do this for you. I haven’t fled and left you alone yet have I, Caitlin answered staring straight into his eyes letting him know that she meant what she said.

Logan gave her a look quickly kissed her lips sending shivers through both of them, Then by all means, the floor is yours as they say in the theater, break a leg.

They walked closer to the stage to wait for their introductions. Caitlin took her spot, inhaled deeply, looked back to her man smiled, looked to the stagehand and then with a flick of her hand. The curtain came up, as did the volume of the crowd.

Hello everyone…I want to welcome you to the premiere of ‘The Magic Mile Murders. Yeah…

The crowd went into a fit of hysteria, but Caitlin just kept right on talking. I know all of you are here tonight hoping to see some of the actors in this film and I don’t think you will be disappointed…. And because you are a great crowd and have been waiting so patiently, I won’t keep you waiting any longer so without further delay please come out…Gabriella Winters played by Julie Malloy.

As soon as she peered on the stage waving and smiling to the crowd, it became nothing but screams and whistles.

In the movie he plays Detective Bennett but Bryley Ashby is his real name.

As soon as the six-foot good-looking actor walked out waving, the crowd was now full up out of their seats. Caitlin almost wished she had worn earplugs.

She knew if the screams and yells got this loud for Bryley then they were going to be ear splitting for the next one.

I know you all are wondering who the last actor is and hoping that he is here. Well I can tell you this… This person is handsome, tall, eyes you could spend all day gazing into oh and he smells incredible. Would you like to see who it is?

The crowd answered back in a long sounding yes.

A large smile came across her face, In this movie he plays the main detective Paul Taylor, but, I think everyone in here knows him better as Logan Chase.

As soon as she had said Paul the whole place instantly blew up with cheers, screams and went into complete and utter pandemonium even before she could finish saying his name. The second she spotted his face walking from behind the curtain, her pulse surged, hands trembled ever so slightly, mouth went dry, and her lips began to ache for his kiss.

Caitlin stood back and gazed at Logan interacting with the audience members when this dreamlike feeling instantly crept over her, it felt as if she had stepped out of herself and was watching as the ambiance in the room hit frenzied levels but the noise drowned out. Wherever she stared out at the crowd, it was an ocean of hands slowly waving in the air as if under a strobe light trying desperately to gain his attention. Because she was dating him this was the first time that she ever saw what the other side of a premiere was like. In the past, her nerves would have overloaded by now and she would have run away.

Logan walked to where Caitlin stood on the stage. She handed him the microphone, Firstly I would like to welcome you. I would just like to thank each one of you for coming tonight. I hope you like this movie. Most of it was filmed right here in Chicago so without further delay I give you, ‘The Magic Mile Murders, Logan said swishing his hand in the air as the spectators applauded, whistled and screamed.

Julie, Bryley, Logan, and Caitlin exited back stage and escorted to their reserved seats as the lights went down finally bringing on the silence while the big screen came to life. Nevertheless, the ringing still echoed in their ears. Caitlin cuddled into her beau as his arm slid around her as her focus shifted from his face to the screen in front of her, elated that she was the first to see his new movie before its official release in theaters two days later.

Logan had his attention on the screen actually trying to watch the movie when he noticed that Caitlin was staring at him. Turning to look at her, "Is something wrong
