David Northrop
David Northrop is a lawyer who started telling stories to his children, mainly to keep them quiet and help them go to sleep.Someone foolishly suggested he should write one down and Gnomes is the result. The Isle of Wight, a small island off England , is partly to blame. David went there on holiday as a child and local legend had it that gnomes lived there. This suggestion has never quite gone away although Gnomes is set in the English countryside

Chapter 1
The Reverend Tooley came out of the moss covered old Church that sits on the top of the hill above the village of Gander. It was Spring and one of those days that manages to be both sunny and cold thanks to a chilly breeze. Under his arm he was clutching a parcel that he balanced in the basket on the bicycle with some difficulty. He hated going to the Post Office, Mrs Scroggins who ran it was a nice enough lady. Famous for her short skirts and even shorter temper she was very efficient but the Reverend always seemed to end up queuing behind someone sending a parcel to Peru or the like whatever time of day he went.
However the parcel had to go. It had reached the stage that he had put the parcel where he could not see it but still it nagged at him until it became easier to send than ignore
He pulled his coat round him and hopped on the bike. He had been the vicar here now for some fifteen years and could not imagine being anywhere else. With a push he set off down the drive that the Church shared for some of the way with Gander Hall. The Reverend, a tall thin man with a halo of silver hair, bobbed along the Hall appearing on his left. He glanced at it, the Hall stood stark against the background, either the woods, which started about half way down, had not had the fortitude to make it all the way up the hill to the Hall or the trees had been cut away. The Hall was impressive in it's ugliness, tombstone grey and square lines with no warmth about it. The Reverend turned on to the hill proper and sailed down the big S that was the road to the village at the bottom passing the cottages that front the road. He pulled into the small carpark at the front of the Rose and Crown and chained his bike to the post that holds up the pub sign which was creaking in the breeze
Tom was tinkering in the front garden of their cottage opposite and the Reverend gave him a wave. He turned as Oliver , who runs the Old Smithy, cried out a greeting and then went past the grocery store and tea shop into the Post Office. A small lady was leaning on the counter with what appeared to be a wrapped set of bagpipes. She was just saying to Mrs Scroggins How much to send this to Peru?
Tom put in the last of the spring plants and turned to go in, the cup of tea on the window sill stone cold. He had put together a bunch of flowers for Molly and to brighten the house
As he went in he could hear Michael and Molly in the kitchen. She was teasing him and their laughter rang
