A Tribute to Tomorrow
By William R. Hicks
Inspired by Walt Disney & Joseph J. Hicks
I daydream of a place, of a clean land
People move slowly on an elevated track
Other people move faster on a longer elevated track
There are many plants and trees about
The inner space is glimpsed
The outer worlds are explored
People are happy and having fun
Their imaginations are peaked
You may think you’ve been there
I daresay you have not
For this place does not exist
It is but a vision…
…a vision of what could be…

"It’s kind of fun to do the impossible." — Walt Disney
~~~***~~~
I went to bed one night thinking of a long conversation that I had had with my older brother, Joe, earlier on that same day. We were talking about going to Disneyland, and Tomorrowland came up. We chatted about what we thought Walt Disney had intended it to be—we agreed that it was his vision for the future and what it could be. My wife, Elise, climbed in bed to my left and I kissed her good night.
I awoke to the sensation of cool moisture on my back. I figured it was simply due to the fact that it was a warm summer evening and my back had been perspiring, but when I opened my eyes I realized that I was very wrong. My eyes were ablaze with shimmering light and I found myself lying on a grassy hillside with Elise to my left, in the exact place where I had last seen her. What the…?!
I exclaimed aloud. Where are we?
Huh…wha…?
Elise stirred next to me.
Uh…Elise,
I propped myself up on one elbow and tapped her on the shoulder. Are you awake?
I-I am now,
she whispered, squinting her eyes. What’s wrong?
We must be dreaming,
I explained. But it sure as hell doesn’t feel like any dream that I have ever had!
Elise opened her eyes and looked around. She quickly jolted her body upward and peered around in shock, shouting, This is a dream?! But why do I feel so awake?!
I know…right???!
What our eyes beheld was unlike anything that we had ever seen before. What I mean to say is that it felt like…in the country, as there were lakes and streams amidst orchards, with rows and rows of fruit trees and grape vines, and yet superimposed over all of this was some sort of sprawling city! It actually looked like the city was made mostly of glass, as if the whole thing was a mirage or something. We sat and gawked as humongous circular crafts periodically arose from the center of the city several hundred feet into the air, glowed with a luminous light, and then shot upward high into the sky and disappeared from sight.
We heard a voice behind us say, Where in the world are we?
Elise and I quickly turned around and it was my brother, Joe, a little higher up on the hill. He was sitting up and rubbing his eyes, wearing an old tattered ‘I
Joe?
I said, perplexed. Welcome to a very, very, vivid dream! Check out the futuristic city.
It looks pretty cool!
he exclaimed. We all sat there for a long while observing the city below. The topography reminded me of the few times that I had visited my mother’s family in southern Iowa—they live in Portsmouth, where there are rolling hills and fields, and it feels very peaceful. Well, should we go investigate?
I’m up for it!
Elise said gleefully. Although it feels pretty strange to be walking around in our silk pajamas and bare feet.
Yeah, well, it’s only a dream. I don’t know about you two, but I am getting pretty hungry,
I commented, rubbing my stomach.
I could eat,
Elise acknowledged.
Now that you mention it, I could grab a bite,
Joe said, following suit.
We stood up and walked along the cool grassy hill until we reached a winding dirt trail lined with fruit trees. I snatched a fat luscious peach from one of the branches and took a bite. Juice oozed from where I bit it and it was the most succulent peach that I had ever tasted. Holy cow!
I exclaimed. Elise and Joe, you have to try one of these!
They did, and
