    A Note from the Editor

Greetings Frontierians! Welcome to our Fourth issue of Uncharted Frontier - Exploration of the Unknown. I am so proud we have already come this far, and the response we have gotten from our fans and the literary community at large has really blown us away.

We’d like to take a moment and thank the gang over at Duotrope (www.duotrope.com) for listing us in their catalog. They provide an incredible (FREE!) resource for aspiring writers who are looking to find a place to showcase their writing and voice to the world. The idea that we are included in this wonderful catalog is a compliment in itself to the quality and professionalism of our creative artists who submit their work to us for consideration. Thanks to Duotrope, we were pummeled with incredible submissions from many talented writers, and it made our November issue one we will never forget.

I’d also like to take a moment to send out well-wishes and thoughts to people on the east coast and in the Northeast US that are (by the time you read this) recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. As I write this, it is October the 29th, 2012. The eve of the megastorm, the day the maelstrom is supposed to strike. Trees are bending and swaying under a powerful and determined gale, and the rain is starting to come down with some strength. I have no idea what the outcome of this storm will be, but Uncharted Frontier HQ is right in the center of it. Working on our issue is something of a needed distraction to the impending storm outside. I hope all of you in the affected storm area are safe, and that we all make it through this storm safe and whole.

Without further ado now, I’d like to welcome you to our fourth issue! Every story in this month’s issue is a glance, a look at the Exploration of the Unknown. In some cases it’s an exploration of the mind, of one’s own sanity. In others it’s a literal exploration story. Each of our authors have, in some way, creatively used our theme this month in a way our editing staff felt truly refreshing. We even have a vampire story in this month’s issue, with one of the most original and refreshing takes I’ve ever read on the genre. So we hope you enjoy the stories and artwork as much as we have, and once again... Welcome to the Frontier!

Tree in Harvested Field - By Allison Walker

    Initiation

    By Richard Lawrence

The hot, bright African sun beat down on the young man wielding a pick with surprising grace for a man of his size.

The smell of acacia smoke, cattle and the indefinable scent of Africa assaulted the young man as he stood, stretched his back and took a sip from a canteen of warm water that was on a webbing belt strung about his waist.

He was quite tall for a European, a little over six feet, with hair that hung down to the middle of his back, burnt a reddish-blond by the harsh sun, he was darkly tanned and his heavy muscles were covered by a light layer of flesh. He was obviously strong, but had not been in the bush long enough for the hard work and sun to burn off all his fat.

While he sipped his water he looked around. The acacia fence around the Maasai kraal was almost complete, and his co-workers, and friends, all Maasai Ilmoran had done an excellent couple of weeks work.

He grinned and waved at one of the juniors who had just finished shaping an acacia bush to fit in the last hole that complete the fence. The young African grinned and sauntered over, although quite short by the terms of his people he still towered over William by a good six or seven inches, his toga like garment was ideal for the weather, in contrast to Williams hacked off shorts and desert boots.

The llmoran carried his Assegai spear with casual ease, stopped and propped himself against it, his left ankle crossed behind his right calf.

Hey man, how long you been here now?

William looked a little surprised, this was the first time any Maasai had mentioned time to him. They seemed to live in a timeless bubble, taking time and life as it was meant to be.

Not really sure said William What, ten, eleven months?

The llmoran grinned Near eighteen, no appreciation of time you Illmeet

William grinned back at him, appreciating the subtle humour. He looked around and spotted a regular visitor sitting on his haunches only a few yards away. It seemed as interested in the proceedings as the people who had been working all day. He nodded to his friend Our visitor is back

The llmoran looked around and saw the old male Lion lounging not far away.
