About this ebook
Stress-Related Disorders (SRDs) are the most common illnesses people suffer from. They can be mild or sever, short or long in duration. They occur because stress undermines our immune, healing, repair and maintenance systems. They occur because stress leads to one or more break downs in crucial body systems which then leads to disruption and injury of tissues.
The symptoms created by SRDs are initially intelligent communications from the Body-Mind to the individual telling him or her that there are one or more unresolved conflicts exit and that they must be resolved as soon as possible. If these conflicts are resolved, the message delivered and understood, then appropriately acted on by us to resolve these unresolved conflicts that our Body-Mind wants us to resolve, then the problem is corrected. Now the body and its organs and tissues can return to normal.
If, on the other hand, the conflict is not recognized or is recognized, by not resolved, then the Body-Mind will increase its efforts to let us know. Symptoms will increase in strength and frequency and severity. At some point when the immune and other defensive, healing and repair systems breakdown or fail, the process advances to acute illness. If the acute illness catches our attention and we then resolve the underlying conflicts, this process ends and our body return’s to normal. If not, the process will slowly and steadily advance from acute illness to chronic illness. If along the way, prior to the stage of chronic illness or disease, the conflict is resolved the process ends and we return to normal. If not, the SRD process will continue to progress and can eventually lead to chronic disease, disability, and even premature death.
If you are concerned that at some time in the future you might become ill? If you want to know how can you prevent illness from happening to you? If you are already ill, and want to know how can you cure yourself without expensive, painful or dangerous treatments? You will want to read this book.
Stress-Related Disorders, Illness: An Intelligent Act of the Body offers answers to these age-old questions. In Stress Related Disorders, Illness: An Intelligent Act of the Body, the Lawrences look at the many types of SRDs, their causes and how they can be recognized. The Lawrences take you on a step-by-step journey illustrating the role that the mind, body and spirit play in creating and healing illness. If you are looking to find out how to protect yourself from illnesses then you will want to read this book.

About Drs. Allen and Lisa Robyn Lawrence Allen Lawrence, M.S., M.D. Ph.D. In 1966 Dr. Lawrence graduated from U.C. Irvine School of Medicine. He performed his internship at U.S.C. County General Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Upon completion of his internship he entered the U.S. Air Force as a Medical Officer. He spent the next two years on the island of Guam working both with military personnel and their wives. Upon discharge from the Air Force he joined a General Practice in Los Angeles for one year. In 1970 he entered a residency training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Upon completion of my training Dr. Allen Lawrence went into private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the West Los Angeles-Beverly Hills area. He practiced OB-Gyn for the next 11 years. During that time he performed thousands of deliveries. These deliveries not only in the hospital but many hundreds as home deliveries and in later in a non-hospital based birthing center. Throughout this period he never lost a single mother or baby, my C-section rate was a low 5%. In 1983 he left the practice of OB-Gyn in 1983 after developing a severe and incapacitating heart irregularity. After trying many different combinations of medication he ultimately recognized that his problem was primarily stress-related. Dr. Lawrence spent the next ten years learning about stress, healing, comparative healing systems. Eventually, this quest lead to the realm of prevention and healing people instead of waiting until they became sick to then treat them. In 1980 he earned a Master's Degree in Nutrition and in 1984 a Ph.D. in Psychology. This book is dedicated to the thousands of patients we have worked with over the years for truly none of this work could have been done without you. You have been our teachers and our guides. It is only through working with you that we have had the opportunity to learn and grow and be sufficiently challenged to reach higher than we thought was possible. This book and all that we publish are for you, without you we would have no reason to write.
This book is also dedicated to Mom Sally for her help and moral support.
Forward
Each year tens of thousands of men, women and children suffer and even die from illnesses that are caused by stress. Until recently the medical profession has practically ignored these illnesses and, unfortunately, the people who suffer from them.
The following text is part of a series of works which will help define the many faces of the illnesses which are presently either not recognized or not fully understood by the medical profession. This work is dedicated to defining the origins of Stress-Related Disorders (SRDs), that is, illnesses that are caused by or made worse by stress. In other presentations we will look at other areas which cause illness that frequently go unrecognized by the medical profession. We will cover topics such as stress, relationships, nutrition, the crucial life transitions as well as transpersonal causes, spiritual crisis and the relationship of our decisions and the forces of the birth process which ultimately create illness.
We hope that you will not only enjoy this book and the others to come, but that you will be able to use them to help solve the mysteries and problems of your life. Hopefully, they will help you heal old wounds, recognize stress, overturn present illnesses, help you regain wellness and prevent future illnesses. We trust that they will help in your own personal growth by adding to your understanding of our Intelligent Universe and your intelligent body.
Introduction
For the past forty-five years I (Allen) have been a medical doctor. Most of those years were spent practicing Standard Western, Interventive, Medicine (the when you get broken, we fix you
form of medicine). While the services that Standard-Interventive Medicine provides are important and extremely valuable to our society, this form of medicine did not allow me to really help people in the way I wanted. When I first started practicing medicine, I thought that medicine was about curing people and returning them to optimal wellness. The assumption was that this meant they would come to me either to prevent becoming sick or if they were already sick I would help them cure their illness and be whole once again. I did not believe that once they were well this would mean keeping them taking medications for the remainder of their lives.
In the 1980's Lisa and I began to teach people how to eat better, solve health problems and resolve illness, as part of my medical practice. The results were exciting and stimulated us to learn more about how to heal people rather than to just treat their symptoms. Unfortunately we soon found that the 15 minute or less standard visit we are allotted by insurance companies and which standard medical practice generally a based on, were incompatible with being able to give people all of the information and help they needed to help themselves reverse and cure their illnesses. This experience brought about the realization that in order to actually help people we either had to leave the practice of Interventive Medicine or practice very differently. We elected to begin writing up and publishing our experience so that we could offer our patients information that would allow us to work primarily healing people rather than treating symptoms and maintaining their illnesses.
We now often work with people who suffer from illnesses which are not treatable through the Standard-Interventive medical system. This was necessary for our own personal growth as well as to heal ourselves and reach for our highest and best Selves.
In our present mode of practice we dedicate our time to four goals. Our primary goal is to heal people. We do this by helping people find and resolve the conflicts and problems of their life that have caused their illnesses. Generally, we work with people who want to get well but who have neither been healed nor obtained the results they desired from the present medical system. Experience has taught us that many of these people may already be aware that they are suffering from stress but often do not understand the role their stress plays in creating their present illnesses. Our intention is not just to treat illness but to cure it. We seek to reverse its affects and
