Bev Brough

Despite a successful career as a teacher, despite building a multi-million dollar direct sales business over 15 years, despite being married to the love of her life for 34 years, despite raising two children who reached adulthood well-adjusted, and despite gaining a black belt in Tae Kwondo at 491⁄2, Bev faced her 50th birthday and wanted more. She had wanted to be a professional speaker and trainer for many years but had used every excuse under the sun – calling them ‘reasons’ – and the clincher was ‘You’re turning 50: forget it! You’re too old’. Instead of listening to that inner voice, Bev decided to go for it, and in 2007, just after her 50th birthday, she established Master Networking, a speaking and training business teaching professionals how to network strategically. Her client list today reads like a Who’s Who of accounting, legal and financial institutions. That success led to her writing Now We’re Talking: Inspiring Stories for Mature Women, a candid account of her personal and professional journey, peppered with tips on how to overcome self-doubt and make the move you’ve longed for, and backed up by the lessons and learnings of twelve other amazing women. Bev has also since established Women’s Business Now, mentoring women to realise their dreams.

One of the best sayings I've ever heard is 'You can't go back to the beginning to make a brand new start, but you can start from now and make a brand new end'. What I love about this book is it’s challenging people no matter where they’re at on their journey to begin now and make changes that will ultimately transform their life for the better. Bev Brough's style is engaging, down to earth and above all, inspiring. Congratulations for putting together such a wonderful book.

Loved the stories of the women 're-inventing' themselves and taking charge of their own careers and lives. I am inspired by the courage these women found in themselves to pursue at some risk financially and otherwise to their dreams and goals. Reading the stories has made me reconsider what I want for my life and career and to take steps towards making this happen.

Bev with this book you remind me that I am the one who determines my future and satisfaction with life. It helps to know that so many others have negative self-talk that can be overcome by awareness and focus on positive feedback.

    Sue Fenny

Bev Brough's book ‘Now We're Talking’ runs counter to the youth culture and demonstrates time and again that it's never too late to follow the dream. Life really does begin at 50…

    Introduction

Over the years I had attended many personal development and business seminars and was often asked the question: 'What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?' My silent answer - I was too insecure to share this with anyone else - was always the same: 'I would be a professional speaker and trainer.'

Lacking confidence and knowledge of the process involved in establishing such a business, plus finding endless excuses, meant this dream was put in the too-hard basket for too long. However as I approached my 50th birthday I shared my vision with friends and was surprised to find they also held dreams within them, yet had procrastinated for many and varied reasons as well.

As a result, I made a decision in my early 50s to begin my speaking and training business from scratch, a difficult and challenging process but one that has been so fulfilling and rewarding, as I am now living the life of my choosing. I now enjoy every new and exciting day.

Through sharing this vision with my 'age peers' I was introduced to wonderfully interesting women who too have begun living their dream after the age of 50, and this in turn fuelled a desire in me to encourage others to step up to the plate.

This book is written for the woman who holds onto a precious dream but may be unsure of how to turn it into reality, or who may have faced obstacles or made excuses over the years.

It is also for the woman who is unsettled or has a stirring within, knowing there is 'more to life than this', but lacks clarity and certainty.

I am so inspired by the revealing and honest stories of the twelve accomplished mature women joining me in this book as they share how they too have overcome many challenges to begin their own business or to change their career.

This book is in two sections:

    Section 1 - My story

I candidly share with you how I progressed from having a dream to beginning a speaking and training business, outlining the small action steps I took to ensure it became a reality, the challenges I faced and lessons I learned along the way.

It is an honest account, as beginning a new business isn't an easy journey: I wanted to include the exhilaration when the next small challenge is conquered and the disappointment of failures along the way, with both experiences contributing to the mix.

I have had amazing people in my life to support and teach me important business and life skills, and as a wife, mother and daughter I also share the same day-to-day challenges all women face.

    This is my story.

Section 2 - Inspiring stories of amazing women

These are the stories of twelve wonderful and ordinary women living extraordinary lives of their choosing after overcoming a variety of obstacles or physical, mental, spiritual or financial challenges. They had a passion or dream they chose to pursue and all have grown from their experiences.

Be as inspired by these women as I am: Penny Cantle, Janette Clonan, Laraine Doneman, Anne Fuller, Jenny Garnham, Jane Grieve, Cindy Hartwig, Vivienne Lewis, Dianne O'Malley, Mariette Rups-Donnelly, Bev Ryan, Dianne Sutton

    This is their story.

    Chapter 1

    Turning 50

Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises. – Demosthenes

The large box arrived. Excitedly, I tore at its lid, withdrawing a shiny red book with pristine white pages. I handled it with care, almost as a mother tentatively taking her newborn to her. Wonder warmed me. This was my very first book, co-authored with Global Networking speaker and author Robyn Henderson and three other networking specialists. My own speaking and training business, Master Networking, was only in its infancy yet here I was, in print, with acknowledged networking professionals; as a peer. I felt so honoured. I wanted to pinch myself: finally I was living my dream as a professional speaker and trainer, and now author!

I was 50 when I launched Master Networking. For years, I had attended personal development and business seminars. Often, the same question would come up: 'what would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?' My silent answer - I was too insecure to share this with anyone else - was always the same: 'to be a professional speaker and trainer'. Deep down, I knew I wanted to show business professionals how to build and develop mutually beneficial relationships through networking to create unlimited business opportunities. But the dream stayed in my 'too hard' basket, weighed down by a lack of confidence and knowledge of how to start a business from scratch, plus an endless barrage of excuses or reasons why I couldn't do it. As my 50th birthday approached I decided that now was the time to take action: to begin this exciting and challenging business.

Since establishing Master Networking, I have met many other mature women who, like me, have accepted the challenge to pursue their passion or change their career. These women have inspired me. I have also met women who still hold onto a life dream but are unsure how to turn it into reality. This has formed the catalyst for my new venture, Womens Business Now. This is about inspiring, connecting and supporting women in their 50s, 60s and beyond, with resources to assist them on their personal and business journey of growth and discovery; to do as I have, turning a dream into a reality and live a life of their choosing.

But let’s step back a moment. My dream could have remained just that: a dream. What motivated the change in thinking that it was too hard and I couldn’t do it? Let me tell you…

I celebrated the big 5-0 with 25 girlfriends. Some had been a part of my life since primary school; others reflected the twists and turns through adulthood. Over a delicious breakfast of pancakes, coffee and champagne, we laughed, gossiped and reminisced about the years I had known each one. Surrounded by wonderful friends, I reflected how lucky I was to have them around, no matter how busy life had become. I felt enormous gratitude: I was alive, fit, healthy and very happy. What more could a woman want?

At the time, I had been employed for two years as a business development manager but I was rapidly losing self-confidence in what I felt was a negative culture. The idea of my own business was already there. In fact I’d taken some tentative steps toward moving it out of my ‘too hard’ basket. I had chosen the name, Master Networking. I had printed a small number of business cards. I had even run a couple of basic networking workshops pre-birthday, just to dip my toe in the water and
