The night air felt cold under the moon that glared at me with a radiance that I did not deserve. The chill that crept over my body was nothing compared to the frost in my heart. Standing in the center of the disaster, all around me were corpses of friend and foes that I slew for a mere night’s sleep. It was then that I knew what I was...

The Bloodstained Rose, alone in a cage of thorns that would neither free me nor allow me to be freed. Unable to escape, I prayed for a hero to end my nightmare and cut me out of this cage of thorns...

    Origins

I was but a little girl back then, lost in the woodlands of my native land of India.

My parents had taken my brothers and me to a shrine for the goddess Aranyani that sat at the end of a pathway through the forest. There were no longer as many shrines devoted to the goddess of the forest as there once had been, nor as many worshippers, but my parents were devout enough that they ventured to the small shrine once every year with us in tow.

When I became old enough to take in the world around me I recalled being held in my mother’s arms as we made our way along the path. She would hold me tight, my brothers around my father while he used a walking stick to clear the path of any fallen branches. Once I was able to walk myself, I found pleasure in walking along the cool and moss-laden earth, leaves and twigs beneath my bare feet as I explored the domain of the green.

The beauty of nature was so mesmerizing, vivid and lively, that I got lost in it. Vines hung loosely from the canopy above, twisting around the trunks of the trees. Their branches were pulsing with life, small birds fluttering about above and beneath the leaves where a smattering of flowers could be seen. I followed their gentle ringing for as far as my tiny feet could carry me, their constant tinkling soothing to my ears and keeping the fear at bay. The journey carried me over thick and arching roots, some so big that I could crawl under them to keep going. There was a small stream I had to get past too, lifting the hem of
