Prologue
We shifted our focus for the second half of our journey.
When we left Canada in November, our mission had become a time travel adventure. We turned back the clock to the Age of Discovery with the Inca civilization in Peru.
We followed the Explorers home to their Old World, and then traced our Roman ancestry in Italy, and earlier to the Ancient Greeks.
Before them, the Dynasty of Ancient Egypt called our name.
And the roots of modern religions brought us to Jordan and the secrets guarded in ancient Petra.
We studied history, and the classical roots of our culture.
Then we rested.
In the next adventures, our focus moved from human sciences to plant and animal. From social to biology, and the amazing diversity in different ecosystems of this land we call Earth.
Rain forests, deserts, volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes, we lived and breathed our planet, both above and below the sea.
On to the next unpredictable discovery, in our brave new world.

Flight: Virgin Blue Bali to Perth, West Australia 3.5 hours
Accommodation: The Ambassador Hotel, downtown Perth
We spent our extra night in Bali at the fifth hotel we tried.
It was much busier there than it was in Thailand. This seemed mostly due to the high number of Australian visitors who are on summer vacay.
They can holiday in Bali more economically than their own country.
Guess that should have been our first clue on how expensive things were about to get.
We stayed in a nice spot near the beach, but nearer the airport with a good breakfast included. It sounds lovely if you forget the rat Rick spotted swimming in the water feature
in the lobby on our way in… Five Star indeed! I was glad we were booked into the top floor.
The flight from Bali to Perth was the most budget airline to date. We were expecting something nice from Virgin Airways and its infamous billionaire owner Sir Richard Branson, but he must keep any airline profits completely to himself. Honestly, we couldn’t even get a glass of water without paying extra fees, and it was credit cards only, leaving our poor kids stuck in a different part of our plane totally out of luck. We would not choose to fly Virgin again, but of course now we had a ridiculous credit to use up. I guess that was a wise marketing move on Virgin’s part.
We landed in Perth, Australian Visa permits in hand.
Of all the countries we visited on this round-the-world trip, the only one to require a pre-arrival visa for Canadian citizens was Australia. The fact that we are Commonwealth sister countries seemed not to make much difference, other than the pre-screening process was somewhat automatic. I was grateful for the Indonesian airport security that tipped me off, and asked to see our Visa at the airport when we first arrived. It bought me a few arduous hours on the Internet last night to check all the boxes online. Otherwise, we may have been stuck in Airport Neverland
for a while, or refused entry entirely. You know, obnoxious traveling family that we were!
We did have some issues with Customs officials, though. Australian Immigration and Agriculture would not allow any cloth or textiles, natural wood or straw/grass projects arriving via Indonesia.
The boys were convinced to surrender their rice paddy Bali Safari hats, as the agent dramatically shook them over a piece of paper to reveal the tiny mites who had hitchhiked a trip on our airplane. Both our boys walked away, scratching their heads.
I was grateful again we had forwarded our Egyptian papyrus art and Thai silk scarves home with Janice, as I am not sure what might have happened with those. I suspect it would not have been good.
Landing in Perth, Down Under, I felt very upside down
. Up until the night before, our plan had been to arrive in Sydney for the weekend with Grandma, then rent a motorhome and drive the familiar roads between Victoria and Queensland, like Rick and I had done previously in 1992. With all the flooding, those plans were completely under water. Here we sat on the opposite side of the continent. With no research and little prior knowledge, we were further restricted by poor Internet access and few personal contacts.
Basically at this point, we had no clue where to go or how to get there.
The welcoming lady at the tourist bureau helped us locate a hotel for our abnormally large family group of six, and we landed downtown Perth on a budget. The front desk handed me a short, black cord when we asked about Wi-Fi, and charged us an additional $35 for the service. I had read on a traveler’s blog that we should expect the same kind of Internet access as Canada, eh? Great.
Not exactly smooth in Oz so far.

First thing on the agenda was getting a place to call home, on wheels. Transport and hotel all-in-one.
The conversation on our Skype phone with the Campervan
reservations center was rather humorous.
For what dates, sir?
the voice on the other end of the bookings line asked Rick upon his inquiry of availability.
I was thinking this afternoon,
he responded.
She just about dropped her phone. Today?
"Yes, today. I can be there to
