    Alison recognized the woman standing with Gabe immediately as she nervously entered the room. His wife. An elegant woman, still beautiful at their advanced age, with her waist length chestnut hair only slightly grayed and her dark eyes, clear and alive. She knew the woman would be here, but hadn't gotten around to thinking about how to handle meeting her or how it would be seeing Gabe again.

    She stood in the entryway, staring, for what seemed like a century. She suddenly felt self-conscious. The last time he had seen her, she’d been much younger, thinner, her hair had yet begun to gray, and the lines that now creased her face had yet to show. She put a hand up to her cheek, as if, with a touch of her hand, she could erase the signs of the years that had passed.
