About this ebook
Zakari is the story of a boy shipwrecked in Japan in 1855. He undergoes physical, mental and spiritual changes in a foreign country that is itself undergoing rapid changes after forced exposure to the technically stronger western nations. There is tension and confusion as Zakari becomes more Japanese and some Japanese more westernized. Zakari strived to succeed even though he is caught up in intrigue and used as a pawn by major political figures. He finally finds love rank and a family only to loose all and be confined to his lands. He is recalled to take part in the revolution that sees the Emperor Meiji restored as supreme leader and takes part in the rapid westernization of Japan.
John Jarvis
John Jarvis retired from martial arts in 1988 after twenty-five years of practice. He was Australasia's most qualified teacher holding 16 black belts in five different disciplines and one of the few men to achieve the 100-man fight. He began his studies in London, lived in Japan for a year in 1967 and has made five return visits, the last in 1989. John has had a parallel career in secondary school teaching, specialising in physical education and religious studies. He is a former consultant editor to International Martial Arts and a contributing editor to South Pacific Martial Arts. His autobiography is Kurosaki Killed the Cat. John is retired and lives on his yacht Gulliver in Wellington, New Zealand. John is also the author of the following books: Zakari East of Hydaspes Valley Low
