About this ebook
Lobo Cliff, Florida - a small town like most others all over the United States, except for the secret in the forest surrounding it. The Lobo Cliff woods are home to a predator, a killer that won't quit unless he can be stopped either by authorities, hunters… or another of its kind. It stalks silently and has the entire town gripped in fear, except for four school friends who not only know its secret, but they also share something in common that only a select few of the townsfolk know; they share the bloodline... the blood of a werewolf runs through their veins. When the peaceful town is put in a panic with the savage-like killings in the woods, the kids take action, knowing full well that tonight could be their last night… in the woods of Lobo Cliff. But it has to be stopped tonight, tonight in the dead of night.

Rod was born and raised in Tampa, Florida and was attracted to words at an early age. He wrote his first book "The Boy Who Liked To Read" (about himself) with construction paper and pencil in the grade school on his own – wasn't a class assignment. His teacher then decided to keep the masterpiece and show other students in class what they could do if they "applied" themselves. Later in life, Rod discovered comic books and was determined to work for Stan Lee once he was old enough. As a student in school he was taken to reading, writing and drawing and by high-school had completed several comic books of his own creation. It was his English teacher in high school that pulled him aside and told him "You should delve into short story writing, give the comic books a rest." He listened. Rod got into writing prose and fiction, but only as a part-time hobby, wasn't till his later adult years that he started to take it seriously, having written a middle-grade fiction adventure titled "The Juniors" (it was a challenge from his son) that was picked up by a publisher. He quickly decided that he wanted to do this for the rest of his life.

BEFORE DAWN
: BOOK III – THE DEAD OF NIGHT
(END OF THE TRILOGY)
CHAPTER ONE:
Awooooooooo!
The three friends turned and looked out of the only window in Alex’s tree house. Marcie, Fabian and Alex were in their favorite hideaway in Alex’s back yard playing a game against each other on their phones when the wolf-like howl that came from the woods just yards away caught their attention. Fabian stared out.
Hey, do you guys think that maybe..?
Alex stared out for a few seconds, then turned.
Can’t be, they’re all gone.
he said.
He sat back down on the carpet covered block of wood that made up most of the furniture in this tree house. His Dad had built it for him two years ago back when he was seven. And it was the only tree house in the neighborhood. Alex was the envy of the cul-de-sac for the longest time. It wasn’t just any old four walled thing with boards of wood nailed together, his dad was the crew manager of the biggest construction company in the town, so they went all out with this backyard hideaway.
How do we know they’re all… gone?
Fabian asked still staring out the window.
Because that’s what Miss Lewter told us.
They heard someone climbing up the stairs.
Oh oh…
Fabian ran to the trap door after grabbing the aluminum bat and quickly pulled the rope handle, raising the door up to reveal their visitor. Her head popped up into the one room structure.
Hi guys.
Whew.
It was Emily. Living arrangements in Alex’s home have changed since the fire they discovered a few months ago in the forest. The fire that destroyed the small village in the middle of the Lobo Cliff woods, a village no one knew existed but Alex and his friends, and Emily… and her mother, because they lived there. Alex’s father decided to give them room in his huge house. He was the only other person who knew.
Alex and his friends shared a history that no one else in the small town of Lobo Cliff, Florida knew – except a select few. It was a secret they swore to each other they’d keep between them. Emily’s father was Principal James, the original principal of the school they all went to, but he was also Santiago - the werewolf known to haunt the woods there in their neighborhood. But he was killed. A murder in Lobo Cliff was just something that never happened, so they covered it up to make it look like a hunting accident. They, of course, were Alex’s father – who was a witness, and the man who actually pulled the trigger, his boss. Somehow bringing up the fact that a wolf was shot, but then turned into a man after he was dead wasn’t something they thought the general public would accept. They rushed through his funeral to hurry and get the body in the ground. But today there’s another funeral, and this time there’s no way to cover it up.
Alex, your dad says it’s time for us to go. Are you guys coming with us?
Emily asked.
Emily was a year younger than Alex and his friends, but she looked even younger. Marcie closed her phone.
I’m going with you guys, my Mom doesn’t get out of work at the hospital until later tonight.
she said.
I’m going with you guys too.
Fabian said following Emily down the ladder.
Alex reached up and pulled the string hanging from the ceiling to shut off the light.
I can’t believe this,
he sighed, …we’re going to the funeral of the principal of our school… again!
Again, a funeral in Lobo Cliff, something the townspeople just weren’t used to. And again, the body of the principal of the Lobo Cliff Elementary school, though at least not the same principal! Mr. Huey wasn’t there long, he was new to town. And he had already made enemies in Lobo Cliff, not the kind of enemies that would want him dead, just the kind that wanted him to shut up. He started something no one wanted to touch, he was trying to uncover the story about the previous principal’s death. The ‘hunting accident’ that he said could never had happened the way they said it did. No one wanted to reopen this case, no one wanted to re-live it, the towns people were content with the hunting story, no one questioned it – except him, and he persisted. Then, they found his body in the woods, mangled and torn apart, by something - an animal, wolf, bear, they weren’t sure, and they had never seen anything like it before. But they knew it was Mr. Huey’s body. His phone was there, it had fallen out of his pocket and cracked when it hit the ground, and the picture on the phone screen was a photo he had taken just days before he was killed. In fact, it was a picture of a few students at his school, students very familiar to everyone there; it was a picture of Alex and his three best friends.
CHAPTER TWO:
Lobo Cliff was like most small towns in the United States. Where most people know each other, the doors weren’t locked much, people trusted each other, and if someone died, everyone showed up to the funeral, either out of respect or curiosity. And this was the second funeral in two months that this small town had to endure; it just wasn’t something anyone here was used to. The funeral wasn’t long. Mr. Huey didn’t have friends or family in Lobo Cliff. He came from Tampa, which was about forty miles away. His family came and they had the body driven back to Tampa. The school, out of respect, just felt it should have done something to honor the newcomer so the Town Council of Lobo Cliff put together the quick funeral.
Alex and his friends watched the van drive away with the coffin and the two cars followed it out to US 41, the main highway, and out of Lobo Cliff. Emily and Miss Lewter stood closest to Alex, Fabian and Marcie. Alex’s dad was still talking to the minister and Officer Cunningham. Carlton walked over to them, he was the class bully, but his look was far from menacing today.
Hi Guys.
Hey Carlton, what’s up?
Marcie said.
I guess we move tomorrow.
he said looking down at the grass in dissapointment.
It was clear that he was unhappy about this.
"Look at the bright side Carlton, your
