Berwick Writers Workshop

Berwick Writers Workshop was founded in 1985 to help writers from North-Northumberland and the Eastern Scottish Borders to develop and promote their writing. Since 2005 they have produced an anthology almost every year on a chosen theme, and hope to continue this aim in the future. Some of the authors have long experience of published stories, articles or poetry, etc. Some are beginners. Each anthology is a reflection of the work being produced at that point. Some contributory authors also publish books individually through Blue Button Publications,so watch out for those too!

    2012

    by Wendy Bell Scott

    In 2012

    we find ourselves

    with a triple celebration

    Historic jubilees

    of past and present Queens

and Olympic sports for our nation.

    Images

    Of sport and Queens

    and diamond scenes,

    a wonder to behold.

    Of crowds and excitement,

    Street parties and beer tents,

    A million tales untold.

    Of roars and cheers

    in all our ears

    Achievements celebrated,

    for Britain’s best

    and all the rest,

    Events so long awaited.

    Sporting heroes

    Wait for zero

their turn to show their skill,

    A medal prize

    before their eyes

If they can hold their will.

    The old Queen gone

    remembered on

for all her long lived reign

    in bloom of youth

    and mourning too

    her life was Empire’s gain.

    One hundred and fifteen

    years since those scenes

    of her own Diamond Jubilee

    Victoria’s descendant

    is in her ascendant

    As she matches years Sixty.

    Our Good Queen Bess,

    the longest-lived yet,

    and hopefully more remains.

    The commonwealth salutes

    Her labour’s fruits,

    for our proud nation again.

    And two steps behind

    Philip’s by her side,

    With an ever-ready quip.

    Lost naval dreams

    to serve his Queen

    In loyal partnership

    Meanwhile Charles awaits

    the whim of the fates

to see if he’ll wear the crown.

    Good causes fill time

    As he waits in line

For the honour to be passed down.

    And in the wings

    a younger team begins

to take their place on the stage

    A burden lifted

    for the Queen is gifted

to ease her life in age.

    So the monarchy lives on

    and looks as strong

with William and Kate to follow

    This popular pair

    Already there

Ready to lead us into tomorrow.

    The Rivals

    by Mary Rawnsley

I’m starving. I didn’t take much lunch before the class. What’s keeping Bill, I wonder? Molly said.

I don’t eat much either before we exercise. I feel hollow inside. Aye, it’s not like Bill to take so long, but you go home, Molly, and get your meal, I replied.

Oh look, Jean. Here comes the star of the over-60s exercise class. Doesn’t she fancy herself in that leotard.

Yes, but she’s the only one of us who dares to wear one.

Have you noticed how her stomach sticks out, Molly said.

Don’t be to polite, lass. That’s not Rose’s stomach, that’s her belly. Oh good, here’s Bill.

We watched his tall figure come out of the Church Hall, where we met for the class, but he seemed to be walking away from us.

    Where the hell’s he going?

Straight to his car, by the look of it, Molly said, And look who’s waiting for him.

Well, if he’s running glamour-girl Rose about, he needn’t come to me for his lunch, I said.

But Jean, if we’re left standing here, he surely wouldn’t have the nerve to come to you looking for his meal.

But Bill did have the nerve. When he drove past with just a wave, Molly turned to me.

What about the two of us going to Miss Kate’s for lunch?

"Good idea, Molly, Miss Kate’s has
