    But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.

      Chapter One: About Arthur Miller

      Arthur Miller is undoubtedly one of the most eminent American playwrights. In modern literature, Miller’s plays have established him among the most popular dramatists of the twentieth century. Arthur Asher Miller was born on October 17, 1915, in New York City; Miller was the second of three children of Isidore and Augusta Miller, Polish-Jewish immigrants.

      Arthur Miller’s father was not educated but he was a very wealthy businessman; he was the owner of a successfully running garments store and he employed around four hundred people. The family, including his younger sister Joan, lived on East 110th Street in Manhattan and owned a summer house in Far Rockaway, Queens. Since the family was well off, they employed a chauffeur. In the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the family lost almost everything and moved to Gravesend, Brooklyn.

      As a teenager, Miller had to work hard to help the family. He used to deliver bread every morning before school to help the family make ends meet. He graduated in 1932 from Abraham Lincoln High School. After his graduation from the school, Miller did several menial jobs to pay for his college tuition.

      Miller completed his higher studies at eh University of Michigan. He majored in journalism. In those days there was a student paper named The Michigan Daily. Arthur Miller worked as a reporter and night editor for that paper.
