About this ebook

With the help of an older mountain man, the two youngsters are able to make a new start, rocky though it is, and travel through the western area to a new home, while the mountain man continues to explore the Oregon territory. Lots of action, heartbreak and suspense. Oh, and it's not for the kiddies to read. Nuff said.

R. Blair Sands

I began my writing career in 1972, while in Thule, Greenland on assignment with Ford Aerospace. My first novel never made it into print because I considered it too bad to print. Hopefully, I improved along the way. Now I have more books that I did publish, and hope everyone likes. You can read 10 percent of any of my books on Smashwords.com and I invite you to peruse them. Thankfully, people who read the previews, usually buy the book. Hope that keeps up...Thanks everyone...

    Chapter One

    Path of the Eagle

Dan moved silently on his stomach, his crossbow clutched in one hand and his other free to pull him through the underbrush. He inched slowly so as not to make any sudden sounds. He moved a stick out of his way, so the pressure of his body wouldn't snap it and make a noise.

He could hear the creek rippling from the movement up ahead of him, but his pounding heart almost drowned the sound of the creek out. He fought to control his breathing as he parted the tall grass at the creeks edge and peered out.

He let out a low gasp at the sight of Molly Prichard standing just about ankle deep in the clear and sparkling water with the sun glistening off her naked body. Her long honey colored hair hung loosely down to her waist and she stood with her back toward him. His only wish now was that she would turn around facing him.

Dan felt the palms of his hands turning wet with sweat as he stared at her beautiful torso and a growing desire crept up into his groin.

Suddenly, with no warning, a figure clad in buckskin appeared, moving quickly, on the opposite side of the creek. He had long black hair that was held back by a leather band with a feather standing upright from it. He also had a bright paint streak over his copper skin.

Molly screamed at the top of her lungs as he ran and grabbed her at the creek’s edge, and then he threw her down into the tall grass, totally hiding them from view.

Dan quickly cocked his crossbow and dropped a shaft into place. Molly screamed again and he could hear loud gasping sounds as he rose up with the crossbow resting firmly on his shoulder.

The copper skinned man was on top of Molly, his body moving rapidly up and down while grunts of pleasure blurted from his open mouth.

Get off her! Dan yelled. Get off her now!

The copper skinned man rose up quickly, turning to see where the voice had come from and Dan pulled the trigger, releasing the shaft. The shaft ripped through his chest, impaling itself right through one of the stripes of paint and directly into his heart.

His mouth flew open and the look of total despair from facing death in the face, came into his eyes, then he collapsed onto Molly, his body twitching a few moments before finally going quiet.

Molly pushed him off and grabbed her clothes to cover her nakedness, then scrambled to her feet and backed away. Her beautiful blue eyes were now filled with panic, fear and shock.

Dan just stood there staring wide-eyed at her, his heart still pounding wildly.

What did he do to you? he stammered quite meaninglessly, his mind almost in a fog.

Molly just stood there looking blankly at him as she clutched her clothes in front of her.

A few Moments later, high piercing screams broke the silence, followed by the roar of muskets coming from somewhere behind them.

Dan gasped, Oh God, the wagon train! Then he turned and screamed at Molly, Better get your clothes on, and fast! He could hear the rustling of her clothes as he watched her getting dressed.

There were more screams coming from the direction of the wagons, still quite some distance away, and then nothing. All sounds stopped. Now there was just an
