Steve K Smy

Steve K Smy was born in Ipswich, Suffolk - a picturesque part of England famed for being part of Constable Country, where the renowned artist John Constable worked and produced many of his finest paintings. He has lived virtually his whole life there. He started writing for pleasure when he was 13 years old, with a science fiction novel! Naturally, his writing was less dominant for many years, as he and his wife Jenny raised their three children to adulthood and independence. He returned to writing seriously in February 2012, following a long illness. Since then, he has written and published, in ebook format, several short stories and, in ebook and paperback formats, four novelettes and a novella, and has been working on a major fantasy novel. His published stories include tales in three series: the Thief series of fantasy short stories, the mixed genre G1: The Guardians series (two novelettes and a novella, to date) and the science fiction Captain Henri Duschelle Stories (a short story and two novelettes, so far). The novelettes and novella have now been published in paperback. Fans of the G1: The Guardians series should be aware that a novel (part four of the series) is going to be published very soon! Mr Smy is also a blogger with a growing readership for his blog Imagineer-ing, Again, fans of the G1: The Guardians series will be happy to hear that they can find background information on the stories, especially the political shape of the world, in a special section of the blog site! Steve passed away on November 22nd 2013 after long periods of illness. His novels are being typed up and published by his son, Damien. Any profits are to be donated to Help for Heroes, a charity that Steve supported.

The night shuddered under the impact of the storm. Lightning scorched across the sky in blinding streaks and thunder made the world tremble under its rolling impacts. Rain, hot and scalding with its acidity, beat down plants and cascaded off rooftops. Roads became rivers in the inundation.

Jenna Elsen sat by the big bay window of her home, watching the fierceness of the storm. It reflected her mood superbly. Only an hour ago, she had discovered that her partner, Tom Oliver, had been sleeping with her closest friend, Lisa Barrett, for more than a year. The double betrayal had driven Jenna to rage. Almost screaming with anger, she had driven them from the house even as the storm had broken over the small village of Astbury. Afterwards, she had taken this seat by the window, tears streaming, shaking from her violent reaction. Even now, she was able to see Tom's things lying on the path outside, being wrecked by the rain.

Something deep inside her had snapped. A dark desire to hurt them both strove to gain domination of her mind. At the same time, something else resisted the lust for vengeance. It spoke in gentle whispers, insisting that she had lost nothing of importance or worth, that taking revenge would belittle her, damage her. Slowly, by its very gentility, the latter voice had defeated the rage. Now, as her tears dried and her heart stopped pounding violently in her chest, Jenna sighed and relaxed into a quietness.

The storm was moving away, taking the torrential rain with it. Soon, the sky cleared and stars appeared. Immense weariness engulfed Jenna and she turned from the window. The room was as it had been ever since she and Tom had moved in and set up home. There was nothing that spoke of the betrayal that had taken place here. That made it all seem unreal, somehow.

Jenna rose from the window seat and drifted across the room. It had a peculiar light quality to it that she had difficulty
