All characters and events in this story are fictional. Any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental. While some of the places mentioned actually exist, they are used in an entirely fictional manner.

    Chapter 1

    Mid July present day

    Monday

Fannie, did you ever feel like someone was following you? asked Dana, munching a fresh cranberry scone.

The attractive Amish woman gave the English friend she’d known since childhood a quizzical look. Hers was not the typical sheltered life experienced by many Plain People. Maybe, once or twice, but it turned out to be nothing. Why do you ask?

The last week or so, I just feel like there are eyes following me when I leave the house. I even noticed a couple guys in black wandering around Solitude.

Are you talking about Amish men?

What? Oh no, these men in black have dark sunglasses, suits and ties. They remind me of government agents or guys trying to look like officials. They really look out of place in our little hamlet. Any time I look at them, they turn their heads. It’s kind of strange, but I do have an active imagination and see a lot of spy movies.

Fannie blew on her hot coffee and looked around her cozy kitchen. Her home was constructed from the large two room school house that she and Dana attended in the 1960s. I’ll keep my eyes peeled, as they say. Not that we have much interaction with the government. That’s more your area. Maybe they decided to keep an eye on you with elections coming up this November. They don’t want you stuffing the ballot box for all those liberals, joked Fannie.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s it, sighed Dana. Back when I was more of an activist, the government probably did keep an eye on me. I haven’t been involved with any of that stuff for twenty years. This must be something else, if it’s anything. I was thinking about all the people you and I have helped to put in prison. That’s why I brought it up with you. Sometimes I have dreams that Van White or Scott Harper or one of the others or one of their friends or family members might hire someone to seek their revenge on one or both of us. Do I sound paranoid?

Fannie rolled her eyes. Yes you do. I think those criminals have more to worry about than us. Why would they do something that would just send them back or extend their prison sentence? You’ll feel better when Larry gets back from his fishing trip to Canada. Since you’ve been married to him, you’re not so good on your own. How long will he be gone this time?

Two weeks. He’s with Bob Switzer and Bill Beam. He calls often, says they’re catching lots of fish and having a great time. They’re so far north that fishing is all that there is to do. He says they have a great cook along with them. I do miss him. Nellie is good company, but sleeps more and more as she ages. The vet says she’s showing some signs of kidney failure.

Oh that’s too bad. I like that Nellie Bly. She has a lot of spunk left in her. She’ll put up a fuss if anyone gets too close to you.

Dana chuckled. Yeah, I named her well. She lives up to her name. The original Nellie Bly had a lot of spunk too. She was always out there crusading and sticking her nose in all sorts of causes. It’s really neat that she grew up so near to us, then took on the world. I’d love to repeat her ‘round the world trip someday. But back to my little Nellie, the vet gave her some food that’s supposed to be easy on the kidneys. I could give her steak for what it costs. Of course, she hates it.

You English treat your pets like people, said Fannie. They even sleep in your beds. I don’t get it. I hear some people even take their dogs to church!

    "I’ve preached in churches where
