About this ebook
A glamorous movie actress is drowned in her hotel room bathtub. Jake, who is investigating her murder, asks Catherine to help him communicate with her. Catherine is a fan, and she's curious despite herself.
The actress is compelling even as a ghost. But she communicates with Catherine and Jake only in terse commands to bring her this or that person. She won't talk to them other than that, but as they listen in on her conversations, they believe they get an idea of her goal.
Meanwhile, a man Catherine knows (and distrusts) is hanging around the hotel. She knows he tries to take pictures of ghosts. That makes her wonder—are there ghost paparazzi? Even if there are, what can she do about it?

Ghost Paparazzi
Jake called Catherine one afternoon and said, Can I ask your help with a case? Can you come to a murder scene tonight with me and just see if there’s a ghost there?
There was no just
when it came to ghosts, as far as Catherine was concerned. She hated seeing ghosts.
I wouldn’t ask, except this is a hot case,
he said. Jake wasn’t sensitive to ghosts, himself. But it was great for a homicide detective like him to be able to talk to the victim. Jake’s solve rate had skyrocketed since he’d met Catherine.
Catherine had relayed ghosts’ messages to Jake before. She wanted to help him out, but she was never happy to experience a ghost. He knew that, so he added something extra as an enticement. You know the actress Devah?
Devah was beautiful and glamorous. You couldn’t see her without wanting to look at her more. But she was erratic, and reports of her behavior had been all over the tabloids. She won Oscars, but she also fought in nightclubs and fell down drunk in the street. She’d recently been in rehab.
I love her work,
Catherine said.
Don’t tell anybody,
said Jake. She was found dead in her hotel room.
Catherine gasped. Omigod, how had she missed hearing about this till now? Maybe nobody else knew yet! Then she realized what he wanted. "Her ghost is who you want me to look for?"
Correct,
said Jake. They arranged to go see the ghost after Catherine finished work tonight.
But won’t it look like bad judgment, bringing your girlfriend over to a murder scene hoping to talk to the victim’s ghost?
Or, to be accurate, the woman who would be his girlfriend if only they had more free time.
Jake said, I know it’s not bad judgment, because ghosts have given me good tips before.
But who would believe that? None of the other cops even believed in ghosts.
When did it happen? You’re releasing the crime scene already?
Catherine asked.
She was found this morning. Her hotel room, which is where she was killed, is still taped off. I explained that you were a psychic who’d consulted on murder cases before.
Catherine stared at him, aghast. "You have consulted on murder cases. Don’t worry; it’ll be fine."
What was he thinking? Catherine was a realtor, and that was what brought in the money. What if anybody associated with her real job found out she was moonlighting as a psychic? A fake pychic, at that. They’d think she was a total flake! But she sold a lot, so she hoped they’d overlook a lot.
When they got to the hotel, there was a little cluster of news-people out front, looking bored and drinking coffee out of go-cups.
I expected more media would be here.
There were a lot more when I called you.
Between the time Jake had called Catherine and now, the news of Devah’s death had leaked out. No details of her death had been made available, but it was well-known where she was staying. A huge mass of media descended on the hotel. Most had left when the police did, and any related excitement left along with them. The ones remaining must be the die-hards, or else they had no place else to go.
A face caught her eye. She knew him! And she didn’t like him, either. Guy Maddox. He obviously saw her, had probably seen her go in to the hotel as well.
What if they remember you from when you were here earlier?
Catherine said, averting her eyes and her mind from Guy.
