About this ebook
With over 20 years practicing as a Psychologist, Dr. Holly wisely recognized that depression did not have to stem from the mind/brain. Always working with leading edge science, she knew that there were a wide variety of dysfunctions, disorders, deficiencies in the body that could provoke depression so she studied a variety of different alternative medicine modalities. In this book she explores a number of physiological causes of depression. If you or a loved one has ever experienced depression, you need to read this book.
Dr. Holly Fourchalk holds a Doctorate in Psychology, a Masters Degree in Herbal Medicine and is a Doctor of Natural Medicine. She trained in Ayurvedic medicine in the United States and India, studied Homeopathy using the REBA system from Germany and also trained in Reflexology - Western, East Indian and Chinese.
Dr. Holly’s mission is to empower individuals to achieve health and wellness. She teaches how easy it is to turn on the body’s own genes that govern cellular health and metabolism. She is a passionate health researcher and engaging teacher. She speaks one-on-one with individual clients or to large groups in companies, schools, athletic teams and conferences.
Dr. Holly Fourchalk
Dr. Holly Fourchalk practiced as a registered therapist for 20 years. During that time she questioned the fact that the brain requires nutrients to create neurons, neurotransmitters, transport systems, to fuel processes and to eliminate toxins. If one’s brain doesn’t have the sufficient nutrients and capacity to detox, she surmised, then surely that would affect one’s capacity to think, feel and function. Always working with leading edge science, she continued her research of the mind and brain outside of the psychological parameters. When she went on to study Naturopathic Medicine, she found that there were various dysfunctions, disorders and depletions in the body known to cause psychological issues, including depression and anxiety. Transferring from Naturopathic Medicine to Doctor of Natural Medicine, she also finished her Ph.D in Nutrition and a Master’s Degree in Herbal Medicine. She went to India to study Ayurvedic Medicine and followed that with studies in German Homeopathy. She continues to expand her knowledge of ways to help people heal from today’s common ailments that allopathic medicine tends to simply manage. Dr. Holly’s mission is to empower people to reach their full potential in all aspects of health. Her in-depth understanding and training, in so many different modalities of healing, allows her to address the inter-connections between the mind and body allow her to help people in ways that few others can achieve. She is a passionate health researcher and an engaging teacher. Everybody needs a Dr. Holly. Also see Dr. Holly’s other books.

What is Depression?
Depression - what really is it? What really causes it? And what are the REAL treatments for it?
Our society has been horrifically misled regarding the subject of depression over the past several decades. While the experience of depression can be real and overwhelming, people can experience a wide spectrum of manifestations of it.
Did you know, for example, that there are many well recognized causes of depression that are physiological? Consider these possibilities.
Nutritional deficiencies that include:
- Omega 3s
- Glutathione
- B Vitamins
- Magnesium
Compromised organs:
- Gut
- Liver
- Adrenals
- Thyroid
Problems in any one of these, or any combination of these, can result in depression as the number one symptom.
So why is everyone who claims that they are experiencing depression either:
put on anti-depressants (that the researchers know don’t solve the problem)?
Or:
sent to psychologists (who make the assumption that if the family physician hasn’t identified anything else then it must be psychological when the family physician has no idea of all the different causes of depression)?
We are going to explore all the possible causes of depression in this little book so that you have a better understanding not only of what may be contributing to your experience but also what options you can consider to effectively resolve it.
STATISTICS
Health Canada statistics reveal that between 13-14 million people will experience a depressive disorder in any given year and that only about 20% receive adequate treatment.
Approximately 8% of the population will suffer from depression at some point in their lives and about 5% in a given year.

The US claims that 18.8 million or about 9.5% of the US population, aged 18 and older, suffer from a mood disorder including:
- major depressive disorder
- dysthymic disorder
- bipolar disorder
The most shocking statistic is that pre-schoolers are the fastest growing market for anti-depressants! There is something seriously wrong with this picture.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that one in ten adults in the U.S. reports depression. They also found that the following were more likely to meet the criterion for major depression:
- persons 45-64 years of age
- women
- blacks, Hispanics, non-Hispanic persons of other races or multiple races
- persons with less than a high school education
- those previously married
- individuals unable to work or unemployed
- persons without health insurance coverage
