      Chapter 1 Introduction

      This book has been written for the type of computer user who has come to the stage of needing a more powerful computer than the one they have now but who cannot afford a new brand name computer and therefore wants to find out the possibility of how to update their present computer or to build a new computer that can be easily upgraded in the future. The computer user has never tried this before and needs help and needs to be shown in simple steps on how to do each operation, like someone sitting beside them saying do this first and now do this etc.

      This book has been written with 3 things in mind

      Not to beat around the bush but come straight to the point. Let me put it this way. If you asked a friend to show you how to add extra RAM to your computer, you would not expect them to give you a half hour lecture on why you need as much RAM as the motherboard can handle but start to immediately to show you what need to do to add the RAM. Yet some books seem to take the opposite view and fill the book with relative rubbish making it hard for you to find the information that you require.

      Try and future proof this book as much as possible. While motherboards are changing adding more efficiency in some areas, the basics of upgrading motherboards have remained much the same ever since the ATX type motherboard came into existence which was a big improvement over the earlier AT type motherboard where you had to have separate add-on cards for things like video, printer, etc. which is now built into the ATX motherboard. One of the biggest changes also was the introduction of the Plug and Play concept using USB ports which eliminated a lot of the problems associated with earlier systems.

      Keep it as simple as possible. This has been done by numbering each step in an operation including checks against possible errors ensuring a quick and efficient way to upgrade your computer with the minimum of hassles.

      The book will concentrate on motherboards with the LGA 1155 socket mainly because it is felt that this type of motherboard is more suitable for home use at the present time. However it will also have a look at the more powerful motherboards with the LGA 2011 socket which is more suitable for use as a server rather than as a PC.

      The book has been divided into 2 sections:

      * Part A – Upgrading the current computer.

      * Part B – Building a new computer.

      Software that could be useful to check the computer hardware

      Below is a list of software which may help in obtaining information on your computer operations.

      PC Wizard – This freeware software which can be downloaded from http://www.cpuid.com/ can offer 14 checks on hardware, 24 checks on configuration, 13 checks on systems files, 5 checks on resources and 12 benchmark checks. This program can easily tell you which is the computer’s weakest part which needs upgrading.

      CPU-Z – This freeware software which can be downloaded from http://www.cpuid.com/ can offer you a quick check on CPU, Caches,
