Hal A. Huggins DDS, MS
Hal A. Huggins DDS, MS, is a leading pioneer in identifying toxic dental materials, balancing body chemistry and developing a multi-disciplined approach to reversing autoimmune diseases. Well known internationally for his stand against deception in dental practices and regulations, he has been on the cutting edge of dentistry since the beginning of his practice 43 years ago. He has been called the world’s most controversial dentist because of his vigorous stand against silver (mercury) amalgams, and his recommendations that dentists refuse to place or recommend placing amalgams and root canals. Dr. Huggins earned a post-doctoral Master’s in immunology and toxicology from the University of Colorado. Over the past three decades, he developed a multi-disciplined health care model that has been influential in improving autoimmune diseases such as MS, Lupus, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. Other symptoms such as chronic fatigue and memory and digestive problems have also responded. He is the author of the books It’s All In Your Head and Uninformed Consent about the dangers of using mercury in dentistry. In 2002, he published Solving the MS Mystery about the link between mercury toxicity and autoimmune diseases, and Seeking Your Ancestral Diet- a cookbook/nutrition book. In 2004, he has published his long-awaited book on hormonally-controlled human interactions: Who Makes Your Hormones Hum?? Dr. Huggins is currently a consultant in three countries at multi-disciplined centers that practice the Huggins Protocol for dental revision and detoxification. He has lectured over 1400 days in 46 states and 13 foreign countries and has given over 1000 radio/TV interviews. His books and many of his booklets and articles are available through www.hugginsappliedhealing.com. Who deserves credit for contributing to the birth of a book? There are never just two parents. Of the thousands of patient contacts I have had in the past 50 plus years, each one has contributed to my storehouse of information that led to these observations. But! My final copy? That was just the beginning of the creative efforts of the twinkers. Jamie Tolle’s effort in turning my verbiage into pictures clarifies ideas where words caused confusion. My son, David, wordsmiths a phrase into a single more expressive word. He pays attention to spelling, periods, quotation marks – things that rarely catch my attention as I skitter from one exciting topic to another. He puts logic into chapter organization – different from my flow of thoughts based on emerging memory flashes.
David’s wife, Elisa, combines straggling thoughts into cover design that, again, suggests organization of topics. She even smiles when I want a font that does not exist. Then, when all is finally assembled, David says grace over the verbal soup, spotting the spots on my tie, untucked napkin, elusive margin notes, and wandering finger typos until he is satisfied that tiny details will not grow and deflect the reader’s concentration. I had the ideas, but without the assistance of third eye detection and dedication to my whims compared to proper presentation styles, you might never be able to absorb personal protection through Patient Empowerment.

Why This Book?
Chapter 1 - One Good Quote Deserves More
Below is a partial list of autoimmune diseases that have responded to correction of body chemistry imbalances after proper dental revision of silver fillings and/or root canals. At the bottom of the page is an unproven statement from the ADA demonstrating its attitude.
Figure 1
"Mercury is the most toxic metal on the planet;
however, in the mouth, its toxic properties are rendered harmless."

Chapter 2 - Merry Christmas, Part I
Tall for a 14-year-old girl, she was hunched over between her father and older brother. Her feet shuffled, supporting only a small portion of her weight. Father looked downtrodden. Brother had a partial grin that indicated hope when he saw me. I stepped back and opened the door to my office. There were two chairs and a couch by the door. The 14 year old was placed on the couch, and then she nodded to her father as her body began to twitch. Brother and Father laid her down flat on the couch and Father sat at one end. He glanced at her increasing seizures, making sure she did not fall off the couch, obviously having witnessed this scenario many times before. Every fifteen minutes for several months. She had seen doctor after doctor, taken medicine upon medicine, but still the seizures persisted.
I don't hold much hope,
Father said, but thanks for seeing us. Something has to work.
The seizures became quite violent, but the family just accepted them as routine. Guess it was…to them.
Six months ago she was a star athlete. Holds the record in her junior high school for the 100-yard dash in 14.8 seconds. Basketball—you know—the whole litany. Loved sports. Excelled. Now….
Tears welled up in my eyes, but then I am a pretty sensitive person when observing challenges created by dental materials. Challenges that do not have to occur. I looked over her blood chemistries. We discussed nutrition and supplementation based on the chemistry imbalances. All are necessary parts of proper dental revision
Mercury is a known neurotoxin, but healing from its damage requires more than just removing the source. I made recommendations while the 14 year old sat up, for fifteen minutes, and then executed the same performance again. After evaluating the small number of silver mercury fillings (only six as I recall) in her mouth, the chemistry imbalances, and the commitment of the family, I looked at her and said, I want you for my Christmas present.
The day was December 21. They did not know what I meant, but something inside of me was telling me to go for it. Now!
We put her in the dental chair and I gave her small doses of Novocain. By the time the next seizure was over, the anesthetic had taken effect and we were ready. The tension was high, for the six of us—father, brother, physician, dentist, dental assistant, and medical nurse—had only fifteen minutes to remove the fillings and place compatible composites before the next seizure arrived.
Now!
I heard myself say again.
In fifteen minutes and ten seconds I was finished, and then it started. Seizures like even the family had never seen. Everyone had an assignment. Father laid across her chest, nurse and brother each had a leg, my assistant held down the left arm and, with all my strength and my two hundred pounds, I cupped my hands over her forehead to keep her head steady against the headrest. Even so, I was being lifted off the floor. So was everyone. We were all being tossed around like rag dolls. Such force from a—maybe 90-pound, skinny little 14 year old. Our video man was in shock, but he managed to record the event.
December 22, she slept all day. Fast-forward to 25 December, she walked down the stairs from her bedroom—by herself. She never had another seizure. I still remember the video they sent me of her running the 75-yard dash the next spring. I could see Father on the left side of the screen, stopwatch in hand. I saw her on the right side of the screen, running. His expression is still emblazoned in my memory as he glanced at the stopwatch, faced the camera, and grinned from ear to ear. She had matched her record.

Chapter 3 - I Have a Nightmare
Sit back and shut up.
The dental drill whined at full speed as chunks of tooth structure and amalgam fillings filled the air. Water was everywhere. He tried to say, I need to spit,
but could only gurgle.
Swallow it, if it annoys you,
growled the dentist. There is nothing wrong with amalgam. You have no right to challenge thousands of dentists who say mercury in fillings is safe. Sit back!
From my vantage point floating above the dental chair, I saw the crying—perhaps 20-year-old—reach up, wrench the dentist’s hand out of his mouth, and leap out of the chair. He spit shards of amalgam and tooth onto the floor.
It hurts! It hurts!
he cried.
Anyone who insults amalgam doesn’t deserve anesthetic,
stated the irate dentist.
But I paid you. I borrowed money. I need help.
I’ll help you all right, right out the door,
retorted the dentist as he moved toward the lad. But he was already heading for the door.
I sat up in bed. That same recurring nightmare. Only this time, the lad spit on the floor. The dream got more violent every time it attacked me. I had heard hundreds—perhaps even thousands—of horror stories—the worst being about root canals without anesthetic. But this story—actually emailed to me by the lad I’d been dreaming about—pushed me over the edge. The edge of what? To fall into into—what? The knowledge that I had to face the dragon again. Mercury is a dragon. The European type, not the kind, protective Oriental one. The kind that St. Michael brought down and stood over with a foot on its neck. My dragon. I had earned the name The Dragon Slayer.
Proof? Just look at my business card. It says Dragon Slayer
in bold print right above my name. What more proof could you want?
That email—the one the lad sent to me—told of a really wonderful
