    FOREWORD

    by Christopher Klicka

In our world and culture today, our children are at risk. The two greatest weapons of Satan to undermine the faith and spiritual training of our children are the public schools and the media - especially television.

As a father of seven children, and working as an attorney for the Home School Legal Defense Association since 1985,1 have personally become aware of this battle that is taking place for our families. Now, more than ever, we need to take heed to the warnings in God's Word and apply His principles in the training of our children.

Peter and Lenora Hammond provide a much-needed message in this book.

Reading this book is like reviewing an index of the Scriptures concerning the temptations and issues that face our children and families and it tells us how to successfully combat them.

Peter Hammond has been on the forefront of the battle being waged for our families. He knows that the most powerful weapon to defeat the power of Satan is the Gospel. Therefore, he has dedicated his life to be a Christian missionary throughout southern Africa, often braving harsh weather, impossible logistics, dangerous territory, and God hating soldiers and governments. He has delivered thousands of Bibles and Christian materials, in the languages of the peoples, throughout Africa so that many may read the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be saved and live transformed lives. He is truly one of my heroes of the Faith!

The Bible is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12) - changing people forever. That is the only hope for our families and for raising our children. Wielding the sword of the Spirit, which is God's Word (Ephesians 6:17) alone will give us victory against the rising tide of secular humanism and the idols of materialism and atheism that are sweeping our world.

Peter and Lenora Hammond also have waged a tremendous spiritual battle for their family, their country and throughout the African continent. They are people of prayer who ably wield the sword of the Lord, striking a blow to Satan's strongholds in the culture around the world.

Reforming our Families is a book that is hard-hitting and accurate. Every parent should read this book and meditate on the hundreds of Scripture verses referenced in order to be equipped to successfully wage spiritual battle on behalf of their family.

It is a message of no compromise for Jesus Christ. The stakes are too high to sit back and just watch our kids grow up and mix in with the world.

What is at stake is our children's never dying souls. What can be more important? Also at stake is achieving the goal of raising families to be faithful servants and Christian warriors to contribute to bringing this world under Christ's Lordship.

So the Hammonds do not mince words when it comes to protecting the family - they call it as it is. This is not sugar coated psychology. Peter and Lenora present a realistic picture of the culture that is trying to mould and shape the family into its image. They also provide the solution: training up our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4.

Peter and Lenora love the Lord with all their heart, soul and mind - and they love their children very much. As a result, no matter how busy they are, they are willing to sacrifice the time and effort to shepherd their children's hearts and nurture their souls.

This book is filled with practical tips on how any loving parent can do their utmost for their children. My hope is that many families will read this book and be challenged to work harder - honouring the Lord by raising their children according to Scriptures. This book is an important help for parents everywhere.

    INTRODUCTION

    by Rev. Kjell Olsen

Families are under siege. The devil knows the power of the Biblical Family and is doing all he can to confuse God's clear instructions. In South Africa there has been a continual onslaught on families and there is a whole generation of children growing up who do not understand what a real family is all about. TV soapies and locally produced versions create the impression that there is no disfuntional family - anything goes. School text books from the Department of Education undermine family structure by telling children (from primary school level) that families may consist of a man, two men, two women, a single mother, and even a mother and father who are married. (Of course, we should try and be of help and encouragement to single parent families but we should never mainstream the idea that any adult looking after children is an ideal family.)

South Africa is suffering from broken families - mostly because fathers do not take up their responsibilities and have got used to the idea that they can cause pregnancies and just abscond. Or, just have inconvenient pregnancies terminated!

May the Lord use Reforming our Families to strengthen families across the world. The love of God, the sacrifice of His Son, the care and nurture of the Lord for His children; all this should be reflected in family structures. With absentee fathers, careless parents, lawless homes, and no parental love, children struggle to understand the Gospel.

The section on What Shapes a Family? is of crucial importance. Read it prayerfully, for it may be the salvation of your family.

The last book of the Old Testament emphasizes God's attitude to the family He seeks godly seed and threatens "therefore, let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth" (Mal 2:14 and 15). God calls marital unfaithfulness treason. In the last verse of Malachi God promises that the salvation He brings turns the hearts of parents back to the children and the children back to their parents. May this book be part of the turning of hearts back to the Biblical family.

    Chapter 1

    RAISING GOD-FEARING CHILDREN

But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children's children, to such as keep His covenant, and to those who remember His commandments to do them. Psalm 103:17-18

The Bible tells us that God seeks godly offspring... Malachi 2:15. When God established His covenant with Abraham, He said: "And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant...you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations." Genesis 17:7-9

    A Parent's Priority

As a parent, one of my greatest desires and priorities is to bring up my children in the training and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4. I am to train a child in the way he should go... Proverbs 22:6. My greatest concern is that my children grow up to love the Lord with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their mind, and with all their strength. I pray that my children will grow to love, trust, obey, worship and serve God more consistently and effectively than I have done.

We are to "tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power and the wonders He has done...so that the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn will tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands. They would not be... stubborn and rebellious... whose hearts were not loyal to God, whose spirits were not faithful to Him. " Psalm 78:4-8

Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9

On the day of Pentecost the apostle Peter declared: "Repent, and let everyone of you be
