Jasmine Lane's Enchanted Christmas - Irene Kueh
Chapter One
I peeked out the window. My heart sank. The weather forecast called for snow today, but the ground was still bare. I pouted. Not fair. I love snow, especially on Christmas Eve. I love it even more when school is closed for a snow day.
I placed my hand on the cold glass, my breath misting the window. I raised my finger and wrote Happy Sweet Sixteen, Jasmine.
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!
I sang the well-known Christmas song.
As I walked away from the window, I wondered what took Mom so long. She had the day off and had been out since sunrise. Although she had never missed the party all these years, I began to worry. I knew how crazy it would be on the road and in the stores on this day. Tugging at my old sweater, all the 'what ifs' swam in my head. The clock on the wall chimed. 12 o'clock. In two hours, Dad would be home. So, she'd better be home soon or else Dad would freak out.
Every year, the folks in Lincolnshire held a Christmas party at The Hall. The celebration would go on until the multi-denominational Christmas service at midnight. Daydreaming about it, I stood in front of the mirror, combing my long brown hair. I jumped and dropped my brush when the doorbell rang.
Mom must have forgotten her keys again. I sprinted down the stairs and yanked the door open. Mom―
A young man stood on my front porch in dark blue pants and long sleeve shirt. He flicked his shaggy dirty blond hair off his tanned face and smiled. Hello.
Who is this guy with a dazzling smile? He didn't look much older than me. Maybe in his early twenties. He smiled again. Darn! I expected Mom, but here I was standing in front of a cute stranger in my old red sweater that had seen better days. And my sweatpants… Yikes, there were holes everywhere. And I had no makeup on.
Not wanting to appear like an idiot, I returned the smile. Hi.
Before I could add, can I help you, he bent down and slipped his hand into a big blue bag. I didn't notice it sitting on the porch when I first opened the door. I was too occupied staring at his face. He straightened and handed me a rectangular package with long blue ribbons and bow.
I have a package for Jasmine Lane.
His gray eyes sparkled.
For me?
Giddy, I stepped out on the porch and took it from him. Thank you.
Just as I turned to get inside, he whispered, Happy Sweet Sixteen!
How on earth… I quickly glanced up, but the young man got into his truck and drove away. It was only then I realized his truck was the same color as his uniform. How bizarre! I ran inside and locked the door.
There was no return address and my name was not on the package either. Then, how did the delivery man know it was for me? I laid the package on the kitchen table and paced the room. Although my curiosity was at its peak, I dared not touch it, as if it might bite my fingers off.
Quit acting silly, Jasmine!
I scolded myself. It's just a box.
Great, now I talk to myself. I'd better get this over with before I went bonkers. I grabbed a pair of scissors from the counter top and cut the bow and the ribbons. Ignoring the pieces falling on the floor, I removed the lid. Folded neatly on top was a light blue tissue paper with a nice flowery scent. I bent low to sniff it. Wow, what an enchanting smell. I pulled the tissue paper close to my nose and inhaled deeply. The scent was so strong, I could almost taste it. I straightened and dropped the soft tissue on the table.
My eyes shifted to the contents of the package. Again, it was something blue. What's the deal with the blue color? I ran my hand over it. It was silky smooth. I took it out and froze. A crop top. An eerie feeling crawled over my skin.
Blood slowly drained from my face, and I dropped the top back in the box. Is this some kind of a joke?
Chapter Two
Ever since that horrifying Halloween night years ago, I stayed away from anything that had to do with Princess Jasmine. And now, somehow, it made its way back to me.
When I was six, I dressed up as Princess Jasmine from Disney's Aladdin on Halloween. What an adventure it was! An out-of-this world experience. But, that was ten years ago. Why would someone send this to me now? More importantly, who sent it?
I turned the package upside down and a square envelope fell out. I picked it up and pulled the card out. Again, in blue. It was my favorite color, but now the anonymous sender's blue fetish was creeping me out. Written in pretty cursive, and of course, blue ink, it read:
To Jasmine Lane
…Happy Sweet Sixteen…
I flipped the card over, but there was nothing else written on it. As much as I love surprises, this one sent me over the edge. My breathing grew heavier. I wanted to pick everything up and pitched it.
It's just an outfit, Jasmine, the good angel whispered in my head.
Lately, I had been hearing voices belonged to a male and a female. The male tended to appear when something bad happened and the opposite for the female. So, I labeled the male as the bad angel and the female as the good one.
What can it do to you? added the good angel. Besides, it's beautiful.
I had to admit it was lovely. Whoever picked this out did a great job. With a heavy sigh, I held the top in front of me. The blouse felt heavenly to touch. I quickly scooped up the pants and climbed the stairs to my room. Before I changed my mind, I peeled off my clothes and put on the new outfit. I walked over to the full-length mirror and turned my body from side to side. For some crazy reasons, I held my hair up in a ponytail like Princess Jasmine.
Deja-vu! The hair on the back of my neck stood up. Except for the more expensive material, this getup was uncannily similar to the one I wore a decade ago. From the crop top to the harem pants, including the sheer overlay around my neckline, my sleeves, down to the one around my waist, it was perfect. How could this be?
I shivered. I had to get the costume off, and now! I started to pull the top over my head. But before I could get it completely off, my Mom yelled my name. I ran out the door. Mom, where have you…
She stood at the bottom of the stairs with her hands on her hips. What happened in the kitchen? It looks like a tornado went through.
Yikes, I had totally forgotten about the mess I created. I'm sorry, I'll clean it up.
Scratching her head, Mom opened her mouth but nothing came out. I pouted as I walked past her. So much for being Sweet Sixteen. Mom still treats me like a child. I sighed loudly. She was right on my heels. What now?
Where did you get that outfit?
she asked.
Oh no, I was such a ditz. I should have taken it off before running downstairs.
It came in the mail today.
I pointed to the box on the table.
I quickly picked up the ribbons and bow and dumped them in the box. As I was about to close to the lid, something blue and silky poked out from underneath a layer of tissue paper.
Is that what I think it is? I pulled it out. A blue scarf hung limply from my hand. I felt like someone shoved a rock down my throat, I could hardly breathe.
Aww, that's so beautiful,
said Mom. It matches your top…
She stared at me from the top of my head down to my feet. Everything.
She took the scarf from my hand and wrapped it around my shoulders. You look just like Princess Jasmine.
I wanted to scream my head off and hide, but remained still.
She took the package from me. "Who sent you this?'
Before I could answer, she opened the package and picked up the note. She read it silently and turned it over just like I did.
That's lovely but nobody signed it,
she said. "Do you
