Introduction

If you are visiting your local corner shop, you don’t need much preparation. But if you are travelling 6000 miles to another country, it would be foolish of you not to prepare more thoroughly.

For instance, you’d need to get your passport, your visa, your flight ticket, your luggage and maybe some foreign currency ready to use when you get there. If you don’t prepare yourself adequately, your journey is sure to be a disaster and you’d only have yourself to blame.

In the same way, if you plan to get married but enter into it with a cavalier attitude, you are going to experience some avoidable ‘knocks’. ‘Knocks’ that have taken out countless couples who were, no doubt, thoroughly in love at the start of their relationship. Couples who don’t prepare themselves adequately for the rigours and responsibilities of matrimony are going to end up making a mess of it. No amount of wishing or praying can change this reality.

My point is that, if you want to have a rock solid marriage that would give you years of joy and pleasure, you must seriously prepare for it. If you do, you will save yourself years of heartache, frustration, sorrow, conflict, stress and regret.

The season of marriage ought to be the best season in your life. Your marriage ought to be a taste of heaven on earth. But for that to happen, I contend that you need to prepare for it and you need to expect it.

In this book, I hope to help you with this preparation – spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, physically and even financially. If you get these and a few other areas right, nothing life throws at you would seem insurmountable.

The family institution of marriage is facing a crisis in our world. Confidence in marriage is at an all time low in our society and the failure rate is frightening. But if you are committed to Christ, you have a huge advantage.

Firstly, you serve a God who is eager to come alongside you and help you beat the odds. What can be more reassuring?

My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.

(Psalms 121:2-3.)

Secondly, you are a carrier of God’s grace and enabling power and you can do all things because you have Christ residing actively in you.

And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.

(2 Corinthians 12:9.)

Thirdly, you have faith in your heart that can move mountains. You have a Rock that keeps you stable in life and an Anchor that is able to keep you from falling.

This hope is a very anchor for our souls, secure and strong, and it 'reaches into the Sanctuary… where Jesus, our Forerunner, has entered on our behalf…

(Hebrews 6:19-20.) TCNT

You also have a book in your hand that (I trust) will point you in the right direction. With this winning combination, I am persuaded that you cannot fail to make the best of your relationships now and in the future. I want you to embrace the same persuasion too.

Finally, if you are already married, it’s never too late to start preparing the ground for a more fulfilling future and a lasting marriage. You may have made some mistakes or missed out on some important things in the past, but the sooner you correct them, the quicker your marriage
