About this ebook
Lester Dent is known today among popular culture fans as the primary creator and writer of the character Doc Savage, hero of a monthly magazine published by Street & Smith from 1933 to 1949. Doc Savage -- Clark Savage, Jr. -- was the precursor to later popular heroes like Superman, Batman, James Bond, and Dirk Pitt. Dent's energetic prose for the Doc Savage stories always was published under a Street & Smith house name: Kenneth Robeson. So he was surprised when his editor informed him that Kenneth Robeson was the name of an actual person. And on a night in 1942, a surprise visitor shares with him an astonishing story that leads to deadly consequences in Dent's quiet rural home.

Blazes!
First he’d dropped his pipe, then he stepped on it, now it was broken.
All the fault of this meeting. No, Les thought, it’s my fault. I should be paying attention. But after years of lighting a pipe, why should I need to pay attention? It’s a habit by now.
Blazes.
This meeting. A note in the mail, out of the blue, I’ll be there such and such date and time. Les hated these meetings.
All right, another correction: He didn’t hate them—leastways, by the time they were over and his self-invited guest was gone, Les might grudgingly admit some enjoyment from the company and conversation; but getting prepared, waiting for the arrival—Les got fidgety and a bit anxious, and he hated the waiting and the anticipation.
It had always been this way for Les where this evening’s visitor was concerned.
