      Bullying, The Guerilla Guide - Katy Shafer

      Foreword

      I have no professional credentials in psychology or parenting, neither do I have kids of my own. What I have is a voice. This is what I am able to do about a social problem that affects us all.

      We don’t need to be professionals in parenting or psychology to be willing to acknowledge that we have a problem. We are living in an increasingly violent society. To turn on the news and hear of random, violent crime is our current status quo, but I don’t believe it has to be. If only we are able to recognize that we are dropping the ball. If we own up to that fundamental fact, and then we are willing to step in and do everything in our power to ease someone’s pain, to make the world a better place for all of us, I believe we can change the quality of all of our lives. Why wouldn’t we do that? Anytime we can. Every way we know how.

      Each of us has a light to shine. We only need to be willing.

      So my credentials are these: I live in this world, in this community, in your town, on your block. And a little voice in my head is telling me to let you know, Your house is on fire.

      Permit me to offer a hose.

      The War at Home

      Our society is undergoing a steady erosion of its’ values. There is a gaping hole in our social fabric through which technology and the media are insidiously, incessantly seeping. As people keep having children that they can’t find the time to raise, and letting technology and the media finish the job they started, we are witnessing an anger growing in our kids that causes them to behave in increasingly frightening, alarming ways. Their anger is justified. We are letting them down.

      In and of itself, technology isn’t the problem. The problem is that people are leaving their kids home alone with it, to amuse themselves, as soon as they deem them old enough, to socialize (though that seems an oxymoron), to do schoolwork, and to turn it against other kids.

      Technology is a double-edged sword. It can enable
