    Chapter One

    Samantha wanted to scream.

It was her first instinct—but the tape muzzling her mouth prevented her from uttering a sound. A trickle of blood snaked down the side of her face where the gun butt had hit her, sending her reeling into a black void.

Her mind still muddled from the blow, she struggled against the rope binding her wrists and biting into her flesh. What happened? Oh my God! As the car found pothole after pothole, she bounced around in the darkness of the trunk, bruising her body, possibly drawing more blood for all she could tell. Acid pumped up her throat every time she inhaled the fresh smell of urine soaked into the carpet of the vehicle.

She’d been stupid not to call security to escort her to her car so late at night. Her heart raced against the unknown, fighting for coherent thoughts. God and Heaven circled her mind, but she was too young to die. She hadn’t lived yet.

Finally, the car stopped. After a few agonizing moments, the trunk opened, letting a gust of fresh air swirl around her. She breathed deeply. A man lifted her out and dropped her on the ground. Slamming the trunk, he grabbed a fist full of her hair and dragged her into a nearby forest. In the dappled shadows, she spotted an old beat up Chevy truck parked next to her Ford Focus. Oh crap. He brought me here in my own car.
