Ready Reference Treatise: The Turn of the Screw

About this ebook
Guide books or book notes are primarily written to make students understand the original text better, especially from all those angles which are often overlooked by a casual reader.
But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.
I would strongly advise all students to read the original text once again even if you have already read it, after reading this short treatise. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to give many new meanings to you.

Chapter One: About Henry James
Henry James was born on 15th of April, 1843, in New York City, to a very wealthy family. His father Henry James Sr. and his mother Mary Walsh Robertson were highly respectable and his father was said to be one of the best intellectuals in the contemporary American society.
His father was the son of an Irish immigrant; he was one of the thirteen children who were born in Albany in New York. His father had inherited a lot of wealth and property from his family. When Henry Jr. was born, they were living in New York City.
His father spent most of his time studying theology, philosophy, and mysticism.
Henry James sometimes went to private schools and sometimes he was taught by private tutors, along with his brothers and sisters. They were well supplied with books.
During his boyhood, the famous writers like Margaret Fuller, Washington Irving, William Makepeace Thackeray, and George Ripley were regular visitors to the James home.
Henry James went on a three year long trip to Europe with his parents in 1855. They visited Geneva, London, Paris, and many other places. Young Henry was highly influenced by this experience. When he attained adulthood, he decided to live and write in Europe. He did not want to live in his native country.
When they came back from Europe, Henry’s father decided to shift the family to Cambridge. This provided them enough opportunities to be in contact with famous writers and thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Bronson Alcott.
Young Henry was an avid reader and he read books indiscriminately. For a brief period he studied with famous painter William Morris Hunt. Henry found that his brother was a better artist, so he stopped going to painting classes and came back to writing.
When the Civil War broke out, neither Henry nor his brother entered the war, for Henry had a back injury and his brother was studying at Harvard.
Henry James attended Harvard Law School for one year between 1862 and 1863, but he did not continue because he decided
