Raven McAllan
After 30 plus years in Scotland, Raven now lives near the east Yorkshire coast, with her long-suffering husband, who is used to rescuing the dinner, when she gets immersed in her writing, keeping her coffee pot warm and making sure the wine is chilled. With a new home to decorate and a garden to plan, she’s never short of things to do, but writing is always at the top of her list. Her other hobbies include walking along the coast and spotting the wildlife, reading, researching, cros stitch and trying not to drop stitches as she endeavours to knit. Being left-handed, and knitting right-handed, that’s not always easy.

Chapter One
December 1818
Northamptonshire, England
The snow was so thick, the flakes fell so fast, that William, Lord Barlow could see no more than a foot in front of his horse's head. For the umpteenth time he cursed his ill-founded idea to take a shortcut cross-country to his destination. It made no difference that he had ridden these lanes since childhood. In the inclement weather, no familiar features could be seen.
With a mental apology to his horse for the treatment he was subjecting it to, Will urged the creature on. Surely he would soon see something to tell him where he was?
It appeared he was mistaken. For what seemed like hours man and beast plodded on in the thickening snow. Eventually, Will decided he had no other recourse than to look for some kind of shelter. Anything to take them out of the worsening weather.
As the short winter’s day drew to an end and darkness started to fall, a brisk wind had sprung up, whipping the snow into drifts, and the hedgerows edging the narrow lane were fast disappearing. Once they were covered Will knew his chance of finding his way would be negligible. He had to stop somewhere and hope by daylight the weather would have improved. Luckily these storms were usually short lived.
