Sarah Gilman

Sarah started her first novel in the third grade. She never finished that story, but never gave up the dream. Her fascination with wings also began at that age, when images of the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis captured her imagination and never let go. Now a paranormal romance writer, she employs her love of writing to bring the allure of winged creatures to the pages of her novels. Sarah lives in Vermont with her supportive husband and two spoiled cats. She is the prolific author of: Out in Blue, out now in trade paperback, coming January, 2013 in mass market Deep in Crimson, to be released in September, 2013 Wings of Redemption, a Return to Sanctuary novella, to be released in October, 2012.

    Chapter One

Sophie Carter’s headlights illuminated an angel crouching on her garage roof, blocking the stars behind him. He resembled a grand demon with his black attire and dark wings, though demons didn’t have luminescent brands around their left wrists—a small comfort. An angel wasn’t necessarily good news. Not for Sophie.

Stopping the car, she rubbed the dark scar on her own wrist. What did an angel want with her? She had no further business with Heaven. Counting backwards from ten to calm her shaking hands, she drove the remaining length of the driveway and pressed the button to open the garage door.

At least she didn’t have to worry about passing traffic—humans couldn’t perceive angels. She parked and left the sedan, shivering in the damp autumn air. Dressed only in jeans and a thin gray sweater, she folded her arms against the chill and waited, her mouth dry.

The rush of air over feathers preceded the quiet crunch of footsteps on gravel. The angel stepped into the brightly-lit garage, his folded wings falling lower than his knees. If she hadn’t lost her own wings, his span would have dwarfed hers by several feet. Large feathers the darkest possible shade of blue mixed with plumage the color of chocolate—matching the hues of his hair.

Sophie took a step back, her shoulders tense and scrunched toward her ears. What did he want?

His chest bled from three parallel gashes beneath his torn shirt. The wounds had to cause him pain, but he gave no indication. Instead, he focused on her.

    Hello, miss.

    Um, hi. She stared
