Chapter 1 - Rebirth And The Early Years [toc]

Raj wondered more and more why he had come to India. His parents were both born in the Punjab, a long way north from Mumbai where he was. In any event, he was American, born in Mount Vernon, a small town near the Canadian and American border in Washington State. He had nothing in common with anyone in the Punjab and little in common with Mumbai either, though he was grateful for the fact that everyone he came into contact with spoke English.

Lisa, his wife, had been a tenured professor at Santa Clara University teaching Fine Arts. In the second year of their marriage she gave birth to a baby boy, but there were unusual difficulties during the birth and both she and her child almost lost their lives several times. Lisa recovered and was allowed to go home, but she had to leave their child behind in the hospital on a Ventilator, because of welts and hives around his throat restricting his airway.

I am fearful for his future, but I 'll not leave his side until he gets through this. He is so small, which complicates things. The doctor's words, while truthful did nothing but fill them with fear, which was written all over their faces. Look, don't be too fearful, we are going to see that he pulls through. He smiled. Have you come up with a name yet?

Ravi, Raj said. My parents come from the Punjab and we thought to honor them by naming him after the River Ravi in that Province. The river divides India from Pakistan. In ancient times it was known as the Iravati, a sacred river. Lahore today sits on its eastern banks.

That is such a beautiful story, Mr. Gill. With a name like that how can he fail? He smiled broadly trying to instill confidence in them "Now, both of you go home and rest. I will contact you immediately there's something to report on Ravi's condition," he said.

He walked them to the door leading out from the Neo-Natal Ward. Ravi has the best medical team of pediatric doctors and nurses in the country on his side so go home and rejoice in the fact that you have such a beautiful baby. He smiled and saw finally a touch of happiness on their faces. After they had left he walked over to where Ravi was lying on his back and stared down at the little baby. He turned to the nurse, "This is one who must make it. I don't know why, but I sense something different about young Ravi that tells me to go the extra mile."

The young nurse looked down into the incubator at the tiny five-pound baby boy, who looked back up at her kicking his feet. The nurse looked at the doctor, You're right, he is different. Once we get rid of those hives he will have an interesting life, I just know it!

    ****

Ravi was two months in hospital before they let him go home. The welts and hives slowly went away leaving the doctors as mystified as they were to start with. Raj and Lisa never missed a day visiting him and the joy of finally getting to take him home was written all over their faces. The doctor handed Raj and Lisa each a paper replete with instructions.

Listen carefully, please he said. At the first sign of trouble, no matter how slight, you phone 911 immediately and also mention my name. Ravi is my patient. It can be hives anywhere on his body as well as on his throat, or anything else that gives you cause for concern. Don't worry about it being a false alarm. Better that than chancing it, yes?

    Yes, Raj replied.

"Now you both go home and get on with your lives and let little Ravi get on with his. Follow the instructions on this paper. I will want see you all again on the dates written down. He smiled thinking about the lie he had told them and how glad he was that it had all worked out.

He paused, as if searching for the right words. I would say the welts and hives that were around his throat were a result of some powerful psychosomatic condition, but only if he were a person who had suffered some deep emotional trauma. This presupposes that the patient is a person old enough to have suffered a deep emotional trauma. But to attribute such deep emotions in a premature baby is preposterous. He shook his head. Ravi just hasn't had any opportunity to develop such deep emotions yet.

For the next seven years Ravi grew and played with the neighborhood kids and he experienced no setbacks of any kind. He became an ordinary little boy, quite happy and cheerful. His early grades in school were above average and his parents had no cause for alarm whatsoever.

Then Raj was promoted and the three of them moved from Santa Clara to Mumbai.

    ****

The stable temperate climate of Northern California contrasted sharply with that of Mumbai. One of the largest cities in the world and by far the largest in India, Mumbai with its sweltering climate and monsoon weather and its teeming millions, took the three of them by storm, literally. The changes were sudden and dramatic.

The first few weeks proved to be trying as the humidity increased steadily with the approaching monsoon season almost upon them. They had arrived several weeks before the onset of the southwest monsoon, which was definitely something they had not bargained for and its effect on seven-year old Ravi seemed almost profound. At least, that's what they thought the problem was at first.

Raj turned and tossed in the sticky humidity of Mumbai, in that dream state of being half awake and half asleep
