    Section One

    CHAPTER ONE

    WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?

Do you consider yourself to be in touch with your emotions? If not, you're far from alone. One of the most common complaints psychologists hear from men, and increasingly from women, is a lack of access to feelings. This is characterized by a lifeless, numb sensation and an inability to experience pleasure or joy.

How does this happen? Most often, we simply have not been educated about our feelings. While society, schools and parents have spent years teaching us about the business of life, we remain ignorant about our internal functioning, and how we work emotionally and mentally. Yet what could have more impact on our lives and our relationships than learning about our inner dynamics? We each have the capacity within us to sparkle with natural vitality and pleasure in our daily lives, but our emotional refuse from the past lingers and causes unnecessary suffering. This book can help you to become aware of unresolved, toxic emotional material, to understand it, and to release it. By understanding how people lose access to emotions in the first place, you can learn to remove the blocks to more enjoyable feelings and experiences. In addition, you'll learn the differences between thoughts and feelings, and how to achieve a natural balance between the two in order to enjoy a fuller, more satisfying experience of life.

    The Two Basic Kingdoms

The mind and the physical body represent two basic and separate kingdoms within the human organism. The mind deals with thoughts, concepts, ideas and beliefs, while the body is where experience and feelings take place. Thought and feeling are two completely different types of activities within the human organism. They're as different as apples and carburetors. Thoughts are words strung together in the brain. Feelings are strong sensations that take place in the body. For example, your thought about eating apple pie is very different from the experience of actually tasting it. The brain is the home of thoughts, while the body is the home of feelings and sensation. Have you ever had difficulty describing an emotional experience in words? Possibly an experience on a beach or a mountaintop that was wonderful and bigger than words could express? It's because words and thoughts are different from experience and emotions. They're different things that occur in different places.

Ideally, there can be a balance between the two kingdoms, a smooth interplay between mind and body, thinking and feeling. Unfortunately, many emotions are unpleasant to experience and we've developed ways of avoiding them. Many people spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking as a means of avoiding feelings. The problem with living in thoughts and other avoidance techniques is that it denies the body's experience and, contrary to what you might think, the feelings don't go away; life is an experience, not a thought. The extent to which we deny our experience is the extent to which we deny life and our enjoyment of it. Since enjoyment is an experience, denying our feelings also results in the loss of ability to experience joy, pleasure and love. We cannot avoid the unpleasant sensations and still feel the pleasant ones. Our avoidance techniques deaden the body. Denying experience and feelings results in varying degrees of numbness, discomfort, neurotic thinking, lack of energy and illness. You might wonder why we avoid feelings at such a
