ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The stories presented in this work are examples taken from my 32 years of experience working in the health care field as a nurse, mental health counselor and therapist, spiritual counselor, and scientific researcher. Like others in the helping profession I have maintained the strictest level of confidentiality regarding information revealed to me. The names and all other identifying information have been changed to protect the privacy of those who have confided in me. Any similarities between the stories presented in this book and living individuals are merely coincidental.
This work grew out of previous research done with women recovering from substances and from others who had experienced life fractures, who were able to incorporate spirituality into their recovery. Like many other body of knowledge, Biblical and spiritual research, are often shared openly and freely among all and are therefore not original ideas. The stories presented here, however, were unique to these individuals, and any interpretation is a reflection of my experience and not an attempt to misrepresent information shared.
My deepest thanks to my sister’s Caroline Wright and Gerda Williams for their encouragement and support in getting this work completed.
To the rest of my family, thank you for being there when needed throughout the years.
Dedicated to all women
who have endured difficulties
and obtained strength for the journey
through the Scripture and from followers of God as our model.
FOREWORD
I am very pleased to be associated with the publication of this most timely book, Hitting Rock Bottom. It is a reminder to us that the grace of God is still powerful and available for all who are willing to receive it.
In as much as Dr. Delbridge is known for her outstanding research work on spirituality and women’s recovery, this book is not just another research project. This is a part of her own story of working with these women and seeing then move from Hitting Rock Bottom to being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit to becoming useful for others. When you are in the helping profession, people’s stories can have life changing impact on you. In this case, the stories of these women moved Dr. Delbridge to write.
At another level, Dr. Delbridge is giving new life to these women. These stories are real by themselves. The fact that these women hit rock bottom and have bounced back so well is not in doubt. However, we are coming now to know them through this work. It is like the proverbial saying about a tree falling in the forest and whether or not our lack of knowledge changes that reality. Here, Dr. Delbridge is making sure that the question is not even asked. She knows these women and she wants us to get to know them as well.
This is truly a gift to us all. We all have stories of God’s amazing grace. The details might be different but the themes are very similar. It is so easy to get to that place that we find ourselves with more questions than answers. It is there that we find ourselves re-assessing our path in life and seeking to re-define our values. It is there that we have more attentive ears to listen. Then, like the Prophet Elijah, God comes in the most unexpected ways. In this gift then, is the invitation to find our own place.
There is the imagery of the Rock and the Bottom. There is this wonderful play on words in the title and which is hinted at in the book. Surely we know what it is to be at the bottom of any system or structure. We can be easily trampled on and we are the base from which others gain new heights. We are the ones on whom everyone else depends but the ones who have nobody on whom to depend. Then, the very concept of rock bottom is aimed at emphasizing the dire and desperate nature of our condition. It is the place where we cannot go any lower.
I am reminded of the story of a mule that fell into a well. It was so hard to get the mule out that the kind neighbors decided to bury the mule by throwing dirt
