I'm a native Arizonan and while growing up, I would often write down notes about stories germinating in my head. I was always interested in the fantasy genre, having been introduced to Anne McCaffrey's Riders of Pern book series (may she rest in peace) in elementary school. I devoured Piers Anthony, Raymond E. Feist, and later, Lord of the Rings. In trying my hand at mysteries, I've found they are fickle things, like a knot in yarn. Instead of cutting it, try to work it out and once unraveled, have a straight line of yarn again. I will some more books coming soon, so please enjoy the ones I have out now. Chapter 1

Amy, my mother told me, I’m going out tonight with Alex, so we’ll be back around ten or so. Put the twins to bed; make sure they brush their teeth, and everything.

Yes, Mom. I groaned. Usually, the twins going to bed was Mom’s job. I headed to my room, where I grabbed my thick story notebook which was sitting on my desk on top of my schoolwork. The twins’ bedroom was down the hall from mine. I’m Amy Anderson. I’m sixteen going on seventeen; the twins’ personal babysitter.

I closed my eyes and counted to ten. My younger brothers, twins Cliff and Nicolas both eight years old, waited for me to tuck them in. My mother was off on a date with a stranger, so it was up to me to put the twins to bed. I brushed my long brown hair off my shoulder, smiling as I came into the room.

Amy, can you tell us a story about dragons?Cliff asked me.

There are too many stories like that. I said. I grabbed a chair nearby and I opened my notebook, flipping the pages to the one I was busy working on.

How about elves and mermaids? I considered it. After all, one of my stories has an elf and mermaid in it. I had written a few stories in my notebook, when I was supposed to be doing schoolwork, so I tried to remember what I had written.

    Mermaids and elves? I asked.

YES! Both of them cheered. I thought for a moment what stories I could tell them. I remembered one that I had written, in rough format.

Once upon a time, I started, watching their eyes grow big as saucers, in a far-away land, there was a mermaid princess. Her name was Mena. She lived in a kingdom beneath the sea. She was the most lovely and fair-voiced mermaid princess in the entire ocean.

When are you going to get to the elves? Nicholas prompted me.

"I’ll get there. Anyway, Princess Mena was swimming along the ocean floor, looking for pearls, when she found a thin gold necklace with a white sparkly stone hanging from it. She swam back to her father and asked him to take a look at it. ‘Mena, I do not know what it is. Ask Odania, the wise old octopus.’

Mena swam to the octopus’ cave. ‘Odania! Wise Odania, I need your advice.’ The old octopus crept from her cave. ‘What is it, my child?’

‘Odania, look at this strange stone. Can you tell me about it?’"

Why an octopus? Cliff questioned me. I must have lost track of how many questions he’s asked over the past hour or so.

Because, I calmly answered him, I read that octopus is much smarter than squid.

I saw Nick’s eyes light up. "Oh, that’s why. I get it." I smiled. I’ve always wanted to make Odania an octopus, mainly because I like that particular sea creature.

Odania looked at the stone and said, ‘Child, this is a magic stone. It belongs to the elves, which live on the Land-Up-Above. You can either keep this stone or attempt to return it to them.’ I paused, for suspense. "Mena had a choice to make: she could keep the stone for herself, or return it to its rightful owners. Thinking for a few moments, she weighed the two choices. Finally, she picked one. ‘I’ll return it. An elf might be missing it.’

‘What you would need to do is visit Elyar, the sea turtle. He lives beyond the Seaweed Fields of Terror.’"

Told you she’ll get to the elves.Nicholas told his brother smugly. I smiled and continued. Princess Mena wanted to get to the land in order to return the stone to the elves. So she put a saddle on her trusted seahorse, Aqua. Then, she told her father that she was going to go find the elves. ‘Come back safe, daughter.’ Her father told her. In order to get to the elves, they would have to travel through the dangerous Seaweed Fields of Terror.

    Why are they dangerous?

Because, I said, with a knowing smile on my face, there are evil monsters that eat mermaids.

Cliff and Nicholas gasped. Will she get through? Is she going to get eaten?

You’ll see. Anyway, she arrived at the edge of the fields on Aqua, her giant seahorse. ‘Aqua,’ she said, ‘we’re going to have to brave the fields. They are too large and broad for us to go around. If we are to go to the elves, we must go through.’ They crept forward, Mena trying to focus on her goal, the stone hanging around her neck. In the darkness, it seemed to glow, making her a lighted beacon to the monsters. Since they are blind, they are attracted to light.

I stopped there, watching my brothers who were listening to me, paying rapt attention. I continued, "Aqua wanted to go back, but Mena wouldn’t let him. She thought she saw eerie lights dancing in the seaweed, knowing the monsters were there, waiting to pounce on her and eat her. Halfway through the fields, in the darkness, something brushed against Aqua. The seahorse was spooked! Mena tried to get hold of him, but it was too late. He bucked wildly, throwing her into a patch of seaweed, where she got tangled up. Helpless, she watched Aqua swim away, frightened. ‘Aqua!’ she called.

In the deadened silence, she heard the soft growling of the monsters. The seaweed had wrapped around her hand, and she couldn’t get it to let go. Then, she heard a growl behind her."

Cliff and Nicholas were leaning forward, listening. I had stopped in order to keep up the suspense.

What happens? Does she get rescued?

I had to giggle. Let me tell the rest of it. She saw a monster rise up, nothing but teeth and bad breath, jaws open wide, waiting to clamp down and chew her up. The monster came closer and closer…

    What happens?

I sighed. If you’ll let me tell the story, you’ll find out. The twins eagerly closed their little mouths.

"Anyway, the monster was ready to eat her. Then, she heard a strange sound coming from far away. She looked around in the darkness. The monster squealed and swam away so fast it was a blur. Mena was alone in the seaweed.

She wondered what made the monster swim away. She hoped it wasn’t another monster, something bigger. Mena wanted to go home at that moment, to get someone else to return the stone. But before she could cry about it, a merman cut her loose from the seaweed."

    Chapter 2

I stopped when I heard the twins giggle. I had to smile. I know what you two are thinking. Maybe I’ll put that at the end.

    Aw. Okay.

I took a breath and continued. The merman took her hand and they swam away through the fields. ‘My name is Jordan.’ The merman told Mena. ‘I am on my way to the Land-Up-Above.’

Me too!’ said Mena. ‘We can go together. I’m trying to return this stone I found to the elves. I heard from my father that they live on the Land-Up-Above.’

'Great!’ Jordan smiled. ‘But first we must visit Elyar. He usually turns me into a human so I can go without having fins to keep me down.’ By that time, the two arrived at the edge of the Seaweed Fields of Terror. Up ahead, Mena saw an old sea turtle with glasses, lazily swimming next to a cave.

Why a sea turtle? Nicholas asked me.

    Why glasses? Cliff asked me.

I frowned. I was going to make Elyar an old sea turtle. But if you want me to make it different…

Without the glasses, because turtles don’t wear them. Nicholas instructed me. I began the part again, this time without the glasses.

"Up ahead, Mena saw an old sea turtle. ‘Welcome, friends,’ he said. ‘Welcome Jordan. Who is this?’

‘This is Princess Mena, Elyar. We need to get to the Land-Up-Above.’

Mena told him, ‘I’m trying to return this stone to the elves. I found it near my home. My father told me it belonged to the elves.’

‘Hm. Let me look at it.’ Old Elyar took the stone in his fins and turned it over many times. ‘My dear,’ he told Mena,
