About this ebook

Doctorate in hand, Jane Ann Summers is ready to return to the South Seas paradise of her youth, when the director of the institute—her mother—drops a bomb. She cannot return until she experiences more of life...a social life.

Determined to waste no time, Jane searches for a shortcut and discovers the 1Night Stand dating service. A single night with geologist Dr. Lukas Gerard, and she can go home and get on with her fascinating study of world weather trends. The only question is whether to have sex with him...after all, it would be her first, and maybe only, time.

Lukas’s own field of study has shown him some alarming trends. He believes a killer earthquake may rattle the western half of the United States in the near future. In preparation, he converts an abandoned gold mine to a secret bunker, loaded with supplies and all the comforts of home. Only thing he needs now is company in his hideaway. Unsure how to find the right companion, he turns to 1Night Stand, but neither he nor Jane are prepared for the sudden impact of one of Madame Eve’s connections.

One night teaches them there is more to life than science...for both of them.

    Chapter One

Jane Ann Summers heaved the bound copy of her dissertation into the backseat of her dusty sedan and slammed the door. Where to, Sue?

"Somewhere we can get a drink and celebrate, Doctor Summers. Professor Susan Wright grinned at her protégé and slipped into the car. Aren’t you going to call your mother and father?"

Dad probably knew my dissertation had been accepted before I did…or at least Akari did. My sweet step mama has spies in every department. Gunning the motor, she pulled out of the parking lot and headed for Highway 395, the main route anywhere in the Reno area. And I’ll text Mary when we stop. So anywhere in particular?

How about the usual, the Bar S? They make those great fizzy drinks. Sue leaned back in the seat and laughed, sounding half her age. Sometimes Jane couldn’t believe she hung out with her mother’s old college roommate—other times she couldn’t believe her mother had.

Those ‘fizzy drinks’ pack a wallop, and it’s three in the afternoon.

Here it is. Sue grabbed her arm. Come on, you’ve been working hard and if we don’t want to drive home, I’ll call Don to come pick us up.

Jane shook her head, but took the turn into the parking lot beside the old, white frame building recently converted from a real estate office to the hottest off-campus watering hole for University of Nevada, Reno students and faculty. One drink, then I need to get home and start packing.

Your mother hoped you’d spend at least a few years more here…or somewhere with a social life.

Jane turned off the ignition and released her seat belt. Sitting sideways, she faced her mentor. Not another word. There’s plenty of social life in the Marshall Islands.

That social life is why your mother packed you up and shipped you out so fast. Sue opened the car door and they headed toward the two-story building. I never heard her so upset.

I guess. But I did nothing every other girl didn’t. It’s a coming of age thing, a rite of passage in a lot of the local tribes.

The cool shadows of the lobby wrapped around them, a welcome change from the sun’s bright glare. But you’re not a member of—
