6 Halloween Costumes - Cathleen Conley
Who needed Jaina’s help? Not Gavin. He could make a great Halloween costume all by himself. He just needed an idea. He decided to start by making a list of things he’d like to be. Gavin found a piece of paper and a pencil and knelt in front of the coffee table. He tapped the pencil against the table while he waited for an idea.
Pirates are cool, he thought.
Gavin wrote pirate
on his list.
I like Star Wars, he thought.
Gavin wrote Darth Vader
and Darth Maul
and R2D2
on his list. Then Gavin thought about some animals.
He wrote tiger
and elephant.
He stopped to look over his list. Those were all very good costumes. And he didn’t know how to make any of them. Gavin crumpled up his list and dropped it on the floor. He needed a different approach.
Should Gavin ask his mom for an idea or keep trying on his own?
Don’t forget to select a choice. The story won’t make sense if you read straight through.
Gavin wandered upstairs to his bedroom. He began opening and closing the drawers on his dresser. Maybe he had something that could work as a costume. He closed the third drawer a little too fast and caught his finger. Ouch,
he said. He stuck his finger in his mouth while his finger recovered.
How could he find a costume in his regular clothes anyway? Did he ever wear costumes to school? Of course not. Gavin needed a different place to look. He went over to his closet and opened the door.
Ahhhhh!
Gavin screamed and jumped back. Then he felt kind of silly. He had forgotten that his mom put that giant teddy bear in the closet. The face looked kind of scary in the dark.
Should Gavin turn on the closet light or try a different closet?
Don’t forget to select a choice. The story won’t make sense if you read straight through.
Light filled the tiny closet. There really wasn’t much in there besides the giant teddy bear. A few shirts for church and the shoes he was supposed to wear on Sundays. He usually tried to get away with wearing his more comfortable school shoes, but for some reason he felt good knowing those brown shoes were in the closet.
He did not feel good about the fact that there were no Halloween costumes in the closet.
Should he try a different closet now or give up and start crying?
Don’t forget to select a choice. The story won’t make sense if you read straight through.
Maybe there was something interesting in Jaina’s closet. Gavin supposed it wouldn’t hurt to look. He just hoped there wasn’t anything scary in her closet. He opened the door slowly just in case. Her closet was fuller than his. She seemed to have a lot of dresses. Obviously, he could not wear a dress as a costume even if they weren’t too small for him. There were also several extra pillows and blankets on the top shelf. Could a pillow be a costume? Gavin wondered.
He wanted to get one down to examine it more closely, but he couldn’t quite reach it. Gavin put one hand on the wall and used the other to grab the bar under the shelf. He lifted himself briefly off the floor and used the hand against the wall to quickly tug on the pillow before he fell back to the ground. The pillow also fell to the floor, along with two blankets that had been on top of it.
The pillow and blankets made Gavin think of a campout or sleep over. Both were a lot of fun. Neither were a costume.
