About this ebook

It’s not every day that a 1920’s flying ace risks his life to bring a plane down safely for a little girl. But when a horribly disfigured Sal and Lillian land in the remote, snowy mountains of Montana, a friendship will occur, a bond like no other. As the winds blow and the snow accumulates, the pilot will do everything in his power to get this child down harsh ravines and rocky slopes. Through darkness and despair they will do whatever it takes to stay alive. A bittersweet story of survival, with an emphasis on the importance of not giving up and working together, no matter what age group you are.

The pilot knew again a momentary sense of foreboding. Unless the weather was very fine it was always the same through here. The mountain plateau was high and devoid of human trespass. The surface of the earth seemed to be made of rough cast iron.

He glanced down at the gray scud that was congealing into a solid overcast. There were breaks here and there in the vapor, revealing gray rock teeth and scrubby black trees. Tendrils of soupy cloud hung from the peaks that towered in the distance, but they did not concern him. He was preoccupied with the overcast above him.

Before he had taken off from Great Falls and headed south, the pilot suspected the weather might be deteriorating. And he supposed it might not be the best of days. But then, he was not expected to squat on the ground like a frightened canary every time there was a cloud in the sky. If a pilot showed a preference for flying only in the best conditions, he soon found himself looking for work. This was his way of life, and he had always ascended even when others had found excuses to keep their feet on the ground.

He listened for a moment to the steady thunder of the Wright Whirlwind engine that gave his aircraft flight. He thought of it as a beautiful engine. He was glad he was not sitting behind a Liberty, one of those leftovers from the war that had lasted long enough for him to learn to fly and finally to qualify as an instructor. He smiled. Because he had spent so much of the past twelve years aloft, he had come to accept the fact that here he was at home. To be totally at home in the air, he knew, a man must cease being mortal. Even so, he thought, here is the only place I am content.

Although the route was prescribed, every flight was different. There was the weather according to the seasons, which in this region of the continent presented violent contrasts. Flights also differed because of the time of day or the wind. During strong winds the flight became a wrestling match as he worked to keep the Stearman biplane on a reasonably straight and level course. The Stearman was a good airplane, fashioned of the finest wood, the best wire, and the stoutest fabric. While it was smaller than the old De Havillands, it was
