About this ebook

Timothy Nonn played a key role in organizing two global movements for human rights. During the 1980s, he was an organizer in the Sanctuary Movement, which provided assistance to refugees fleeing war-torn Central America. From 2004 to 2008, he was an organizer in the Darfur Movement, which sought to end genocide in Sudan. His community-based model of organizing was praised in several books on the Darfur Movement, including Not on Our Watch by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast and Where Mercy Fails by Chris Herlinger and Paul Jeffrey.
As a national leader in both of these movements, he has given countless media interviews and spoken at a broad range of venues including colleges and high schools, churches and synagogues and public rallies. He has a Masters of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Graduate Theological Union. He has received several awards and honors for his humanitarian work, including the 2007 Charles Shelby Rooks Social Prophet Award from the United Church of Christ.

Timothy Nonn

As an activist and ethicist, I have seen many people succumb to the epidemic of despair caused by global crises. The remedy to this despair cannot be found either in passive spirituality or unreflective activism. Contemplative activism – the practice of experiencing the sacred wholeness of being in everyday life and social movements – allows us to confront despair and discover inner resources of hope and compassion so that we can lead more fulfilling lives. This book will appeal to anyone looking for practical ways to sustain their activism and spiritual life in a world suffering from despair, cynicism and indifference. I have four decades of experience as a national leader in several social movements. I also have a Ph.D. in ethics. Since October 2011, I have worked as an organizer in the Occupy Movement. My background as an activist and academic has created extensive networks of contacts and supporters. My work has been covered in the national media and several books, including Not on Our Watch by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast. I have received awards for my humanitarian work, including the 2007 Charles Shelby Rooks Social Prophet Award from the United Church of Christ. I have published numerous essays, articles, poetry and op-eds.

spiritual exercise for a rainy night

    around me sacred space

    incense of cool rain

    candles of shimmering stars

    bells of ocean wind

    within me sacred space

    waters of flowing rivers

    light of distant suns

    breath of lush gardens

    through me sacred space

    freeing of uncried tears

    illumination of hidden paths

    opening of closed windows

    faith

    it could be said

that changing the world is not

    knowing what to do

    but not knowing

    and doing it anyway

    confession

    we believe

the wind plays with the clouds

and winds up turning them into

    Sistine Chapel masterpieces

    not worrying if they disappear

in an hour or a day forever

    we believe

the wagging tail of a dog

and the purring of a cat

    means they are willing

to forgive us for our sins

    and make us whole again

    we believe

a little girl seeing a baby

in its stroller wants to touch

the newborn in the same way

    that dew in the morning

forms mirrors of the sky on the petals of a rose

    we believe

our dreams of a better world

may not qualify us to run it

but who would want to run it anyway

    when it is doing wonderfully

    on its own

    emptiness

    can you imagine

    emptying yourself

    of ideas concepts and beliefs

    so that nothing

    stands in the way

    between you and life

    and an apple

    is the universe
