Rambling Man Walks The Ridgeway: From Overton Hill to Ivinghoe Beacon
()
About this ebook
All good journeys start somewhere. There is always a beginning. There is always the place where it all starts.
The place where the journey starts may be amazing. It may be mundane. It may be glamorous. It may be dour. It may be exciting and adventurous. Or it may be besides a road a few miles away from Swindon.
The Ridgeway goes for the Swindon based option to start its journey; a National Trail that follows the part of the absolutely ancient former "green" road known as The Ridge Way.
The modern route is just a bit shorter the original 400 mile one. The National Trail was opened in 1973 and provides a route for walkers connecting Overton Hill in Wiltshire with Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; an 87 mile route with ancient forts, barrows, white horses, monuments and more. Or, if you're Rambling Man, you get rural pubs playing trance music and revelations about 1980s television programme Button Moon, that shake you to the core.

Note from the Author
A National Trail since 1972, The Ridgeway follows the route of an ancient road of the same name that has been used for over 5,000 years. The modern version is a subset of its ancestor, taking the walker on a trip of 87 miles through southern England, from Overton Hill in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.
It's a journey along a different way of life transporting you away from the world of the car, even if you are amazingly close to London. And even if the path goes over some busy main roads.
I walked the Ridgeway in three trips in the springs of 2011 and 2012. This eBook version collects together, for the first time, the articles I wrote about those three trips, in one compilation.
And in case you're interested, the Star Inn at Sparsholt has since changed hands. Just in case you were thinking of heading there for a rave.
introIntroduction
All good journeys start somewhere. There is always a beginning. There is always the place where it all starts.
The place where the journey starts may be amazing. It may be mundane. It may be glamorous. It may be dour. It may be exciting and adventurous. Or it may be Swindon.
We'd gone to Swindon so we could start walking the Ridgeway, a National Trail that follows the absolutely ancient former green
road known as The Ridge Way. In use for at least 5000 years, it was once an important route for tradesman, armies and drovers, connecting the Dorset coast with the Wash in Norfolk.
The modern route is just a bit shorter the original 400 mile one. The National Trail was opened in 1973 and provides a route for walkers connecting Overton Hill in Wiltshire with Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; an 87 mile route with ancient forts, barrows, monuments and more. It's a walk with history, providing an idea of how their ancestors got around, and at what speed.
But it must it said, that it doesn't go to Swindon. Swindon is most certainly not on the Ridgeway, either in its original or modern capacity. However the start of the Ridgeway National Trail is in the middle of nowhere. The nearest village is Avebury, three miles away; best known for its henge and long barrow. Avebury is a bus ride away from Swindon and where we'd hoped to stay the night. It would be fantastic, we thought as we phoned the first B&B on our list.
20 March? Is that the equinox?
asked the lady at the other end of the telephone.
I've absolutely no idea
I confessed. I just wanted to do some walking. Equinox? Meant nothing to me. We'd just picked the only time Catherine and I could get a few days away. The Equinox was the last thing on our minds.
Hmm. Yes, I think it is. I've got a booking for a large group I'm afraid. Had it in the diary for ages. Not the best time to try and get a room in Avebury, during the equinox.
Ah right. A night in Swindon it would
